Heavy Equipment Operator – Civil Construction - Wilmington, NC
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to support utility and earthwork operations on heavy civil construction projects. This role is responsible for operating and maintaining heavy equipment used for grading, excavation, pipe installation, and site development while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to project specifications.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, compactors, and other machinery used in utility and earthmoving operations
- Perform grading, trenching, pipe placement, compaction, and material handling activities
- Operate GPS machine control systems for grading and excavation work
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and grade stakes
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards
- Conduct routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance
- Maintain accurate daily equipment and maintenance logs
- Identify equipment issues and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel
- Monitor site conditions including compaction, moisture content, and fill placement requirements
- Maintain clean and properly functioning equipment
- Collaborate effectively with supervisors, crew members, and project teams
Identify and report potential jobsite hazards
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license required
- Minimum 4 years of heavy equipment operating experience
- Minimum 4 years of heavy equipment maintenance experience preferred
- Experience with utility installation and earthmoving operations
- Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and grading plans
- Familiarity with GPS machine control systems
- Strong understanding of safe equipment operation and jobsite safety practices
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
