Job Title: Clinical Research Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical OR Pediatrics - BOTH OPEN

Location: NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, Maryland 20892, United States

Schedule/Shift: Night Shift (Flexible 8 or 12-hour shifts; 36–40 hours per week including holiday and weekend rotations as needed)

Contract Length: 13-Week Contract (High probability of extension)

Position Overview

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center—the world’s largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research—is seeking compassionate, highly skilled Registered Nurses to join our team in either our Pediatric Clinical Research Unit or Adult Medical/Surgical Units. In these specialized roles, you will integrate traditional acute-care bedside nursing with clinical research execution—ensuring patient safety, delivering advanced care, maintaining protocol integrity, and protecting human research subjects enrolled in groundbreaking Phase I–III clinical trials.

Applicants will be aligned to either the Pediatrics or Med/Surg specialty track based on clinical background and unit needs.

Core Responsibilities

• Clinical Patient Care: Deliver direct, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care tailored to your assigned unit population (pediatric acute care/oncology or adult Med/Surg). Perform continuous physical, clinical, and developmental assessments.
• Protocol Execution & Data Integrity: Administer experimental therapies, investigational medications, chemotherapy, and blood products according to research protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. Accurately collect and process research data (e.g., PK draws, precise dosing times).
• Patient Monitoring & Safety: Manage specialized medical equipment, central lines, and monitoring systems. Identify subtle changes in clinical condition, manage acute events, and initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
• Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed Electronic Health Records (EHR) tracking patient responses, adverse events, and protocol parameters in compliance with NIH research standards and HIPAA/CUI regulations.
• Patient & Family Advocacy: Support the informed consent process, educate patients and families on treatment plans, and provide compassionate emotional support throughout the research process.

Qualifications & Requirements

Common Requirements (All Roles):

• Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) License
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Specialty Experience Requirements (Select One Track):

• Pediatric Specialty Track: 2 to 3 years of current, direct pediatric acute care experience (e.g., pediatric inpatient, PICU, or pediatric step-down unit).
• Med/Surg Specialty Track: 2 years of current Medical/Surgical acute care hospital experience.

Preferred Skills:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Prior experience in clinical research, clinical trials, or protocol management
• Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and federal health privacy standards
