Machine Builder – Custom Precision Equipment

Location: Wheeling, IL

Shift: 1st Shift | 6:00 AM–2:30 PM

Compensation: $35–$42/hour based on your experience

Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire | 6 months

Travel: Roughly 2–3 overnight trips annually

Unlike high-volume production roles, you will not be repeating the same basic tasks here. Instead, you will join a tight-knit, skilled team to construct custom, made-to-order machinery from the ground up. As a Machine Builder, you will be responsible for the mechanical construction and assembly of custom industrial equipment and various subassemblies.

• Assemble custom machinery and mechanical sub-units by interpreting engineering blueprints and technical drawings.
• Ensure high-quality standards by installing precision mechanical components, spindles, slides, and fixtures.
• Utilize a variety of power tools, hand tools, and specialized inspection equipment to complete builds.
• Help the team avoid production delays by identifying potential technical issues while reviewing mechanical blueprints.
• Ensure equipment performance by performing final machine alignments and necessary adjustments.
• Verify build accuracy by utilizing micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other precision measuring devices.
• Maintain accurate records by documenting all inspection results and measurements.
• Contribute to a safe and efficient workplace by keeping your area organized and professional.
• Collaborate with a small group of electrical and mechanical builders to finalize custom equipment projects.
• Support our clients by occasionally traveling to their sites for equipment startup and installation.

The ideal candidate possesses experience in constructing complete machines or complex mechanical assemblies rather than just performing repetitive component assembly.

• 3–5 years of experience in machine tool, tool & die, equipment building, or related mechanical assembly.
• Proven track record of building both complete assemblies and subassemblies.
• Proficiency in using precision measuring tools such as gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
• Strong ability to interpret and apply mechanical blueprints and engineering schematics.
• Demonstrated commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail.
• Ability to maintain an organized and structured workspace.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for customer-site installations.

• Experience operating precision equipment like mills, lathes, or grinders.
• Background working with custom equipment or OEM manufacturers.
• Familiarity with ISO 9000 quality standards.
• Previous experience in field service or direct customer interaction.
• Basic electrical knowledge, including troubleshooting or panel building.

A degree is not required for this role.

1st Shift: 6:00 AM–2:30 PM. Once training is complete, there is potential flexibility to adjust your start time between 7:00 and 8:00 AM.

• Initial 30-minute phone screening with the Engineering Manager.
• In-person interview involving the Machine Building team, Engineering, and HR.
