What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at Matrix Finance and Accounting?
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the organization’s financial records. This position is responsible for complex accounting functions including month-end close, financial reporting, grant and fund accounting, and maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The Senior Accountant will work extensively in Sage Intacct and collaborate closely with finance leadership to support the organization’s mission and financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and perform month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Maintain the general ledger in Sage Intacct, ensuring accuracy and proper classification of transactions
- Prepare internal and external financial reports in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Perform grant, fund, and restricted net asset accounting, ensuring compliance with donor and grantor requirements
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Support annual audits, tax filings (Form 990), and other regulatory or compliance reporting
- Review and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including cash, receivables, payables, and deferred revenue
- Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to ensure financial integrity
- Partner with program managers and leadership to provide financial insights and support decision-making
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting staff as needed
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and system efficiencies within Sage Intacct
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 3–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization
- Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct or a comparable ERP system
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience with grant and fund accounting
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CPA-eligible
- Experience supporting audits and Form 990 preparation
- Prior experience working in a multi-fund or multi-program nonprofit environment
