Position Summary
The CIS Solution Architect III plays a critical role in a large-scale Customer Information System (CIS) modernization program at Xcel Energy. This multi-year transformation will replace a legacy billing platform with SAP S/4HANA for Utilities (IS-U) and Salesforce Energy and Utilities Cloud.
This role is responsible for designing and governing end-to-end solution architectures across SAP, Salesforce, and enterprise platforms. The architect will ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards, Clean Core principles, and scalable, secure, high-performing system design across hybrid cloud and on-prem environments.
Project Overview
Enterprise CIS Modernization Program (4–5 years)
Transition from legacy billing system to SAP S/4HANA Utilities (IS-U) and Salesforce
Multi-million-dollar, high-visibility transformation initiative
Focus on architecture design, governance, blueprinting, and implementation validation
Work Environment & Schedule
Hybrid model: Onsite Tuesday–Thursday; remote Monday & Friday
Preferred locations: Minneapolis, MN or Denver, CO
Limited travel required (approximately quarterly)
Core working hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM CST
Key Responsibilities
Design and maintain end-to-end solution architecture across enterprise systems including SAP S/4HANA, Salesforce, and supporting platforms
Lead architecture for key business processes such as billing, payments, and collections
Enforce Clean Core principles by minimizing customizations and promoting standard solutions
Define and evaluate architecture patterns, integration strategies, and data movement approaches
Provide governance over architecture standards, best practices, and design consistency
Lead design reviews and present solutions to architecture review boards
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including business, technical, and vendor partners
Ensure solutions meet non-functional requirements (security, scalability, resiliency, performance, observability)
Validate implementation against approved architecture designs
Identify and recommend emerging technologies aligned with enterprise architecture strategy
Required Qualifications
10 years of experience in solution or enterprise architecture
2 years of experience with SAP S/4HANA Utilities (IS-U)
2 years of experience with SAP BTP and Integration Suite
4 years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Proven experience designing end-to-end architectures across complex, multi-system environments
Strong expertise in hybrid cloud and on-prem architecture patterns
Experience with architecture governance, standards, and best practices
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
SAP Certified Solution Architect or Technology Professional certification
Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, TOGAF, or LeanIX
Utility industry experience
Technical Skills
Integration and data architecture (SAP BTP, AWS, IBM ACE preferred)
Cloud and hybrid architecture solution design (AWS preferred)
Enterprise-wide solution architecture across complex ecosystems
Architecture modeling, solution option analysis, and recommendations
Strong understanding of security, scalability, resiliency, performance, and observability
