Position Overview
Xcel Energy is seeking a Construction Supervisor III to support the ~300 MW Cunningham 2 Solar project in Hobbs, NM. This role provides field-based construction oversight with a strong emphasis on mechanical inspections and some civil inspections, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance across EPC construction activities.
The Construction Supervisor will work closely with the EPC contractor, Mortenson, and internal engineering and project management teams to monitor daily construction progress and document inspections using ArcGIS.
This is a 12-month contract assignment with potential continuity on future projects based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
Provide on-site mechanical and civil construction inspection oversight
Monitor EPC construction activities for quality, safety, and compliance
Conduct daily field walk-downs with EPC and inspection teams
Complete and upload inspection reports using ArcGIS (via iPad/phone)
Participate in Plan-of-Day (POD) meetings and internal coordination huddles
Collaborate with Construction Manager, Project Manager, engineers, and subcontractors
Ensure adherence to site safety standards and protocols
Support documentation and communication through Procore (preferred)
Typical Workday & Schedule
Arrive on site between 6:30–7:00 AM MT
Attend 7:30 AM Plan-of-Day (POD) meeting
Field inspections and documentation throughout the day
Inspection frequency ranges from 1–7 per day depending on project phase
Work Hours:
Average ~50 hours per week
Some weeks may range from 40–60 hours
Potential for Saturdays and occasional Sundays depending on project needs
Reporting Structure & Collaboration
Reports to the on-site Construction Manager
Works closely with:
Project Manager (budget owner)
Electrical inspectors and engineers
Mechanical and civil engineers
EPC contractor (Mortenson)
Subcontractors (e.g., compaction testing teams)
Work Environment & Safety
Field-based, active construction site (95% onsite presence)
Strong safety mindset required
Must strictly adhere to site safety standards and procedures
Access to Cunningham 1 Solar site as needed
Tools & Equipment
ArcGIS (license and training provided)
Procore (preferred)
iPad provided; phone not provided
Supplier-furnished vehicle preferred
Valid driver’s license required
Steel-toe boots required (one-time reimbursement up to $75)
Required Qualifications
7 years of mechanical and/or civil construction oversight experience (solar preferred)
OR2–3 years of directly relevant field inspection experience with an engineering degree
Hands-on inspection experience in field construction environments
Strong safety culture and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively across EPC and site teams
Preferred Qualifications
Solar project experience
Experience working with Mortenson or Blattner
Prior experience supporting Xcel Energy or NSP portfolio projects
Experience with ArcGIS and Procore
Travel, Per Diem & Stipends
Travel: <5% (occasional trips to Amarillo, TX or regional sites; Denver travel rare)
Per Diem: 7 days/week at current GSA rates for Hobbs, NM (per Xcel policy)
$350/month travel stipend
Assignment Details
Initial term: 12 months
Project duration: Approximately 14 months
High-performing contractors may transition to future projects
Full-time, on-site at Cunningham 2 Solar (Hobbs, NM)
Non-local candidates considered (relocation at candidate’s expense)
