Diesel Technician
Location: Gary, IN
Schedule: Monday through Friday, available on 1st or 2nd shift.
Compensation: $28 to $38 hourly.
Professional Expectations:
- Perform comprehensive maintenance and repairs on gasoline and diesel buses, ranging from routine upkeep to complete vehicle servicing.
- Identify mechanical issues and execute a structured preventive maintenance schedule to ensure fleet reliability.
- Complete both major and minor overhauls for transmissions and engines.
- Maintain and repair essential components including HVAC units, wheel chair lifts, fuel systems, air compressors, and braking systems.
- Ensure vehicle air conditioning systems are fully operational and serviced.
- Conduct thorough inspections and necessary repairs on school buses to ensure compliance with DOT standards.
- Document all labor hours and materials utilized during service tasks.
Qualifications and Background:
- Experience with medium-duty buses is required, with a preference for those familiar with International Truck or Bus platforms.
- Candidates are expected to provide their own personal toolset.
- Possess a strong understanding of pupil transportation regulations, such as IDOT inspection standards, with a preference for a Class B CDL featuring air brake endorsements and A/C certification.
- Demonstrate clear verbal and written communication skills to foster positive interactions with both internal staff and external clients.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and provide high-quality service while managing tight deadlines and high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrate the self-motivation required to complete assigned tasks independently and efficiently.
Physical Demands:
- Capable of performing core job duties safely in alignment with ADA, FMLA, and other regulatory standards while meeting productivity benchmarks.
- Consistent and reliable attendance is a fundamental requirement of this role.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly during telephone interactions.
- Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
