Position Overview
We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Survey Party Chief to lead field survey operations out of the Pittsburgh, PA office. This position is ideal for a hands-on professional who can effectively manage field teams, ensure data accuracy, and collaborate closely with project stakeholders. You will play a critical role in supporting design, engineering, and construction activities by delivering precise and timely survey data.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage field survey crews conducting:
- Boundary and topographic surveys
- Construction staking
- ALTA/NSPS land title surveys
- Control and GPS surveys
- Oversee the setup and operation of modern survey equipment, including:
- Total stations
- GPS receivers
- Digital data collectors
- Ensure accurate and complete recording of field notes, sketches, and digital data
- Prepare and review survey drawings, plats, and reports for internal teams and clients
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to meet project goals and schedules
- Train and mentor junior survey technicians, supporting team development and efficiency
- Maintain and inspect survey equipment, ensuring functionality and accuracy
- Follow and enforce safety protocols in all field operations
- Stay current with the latest surveying methods, regulations, and technology
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree in Surveying, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
- SIT (Surveyor in Training) certification preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Survey Party Chief or senior field surveyor
- Proficient in using modern surveying tools and software, including:
- Total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment
- AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center (preferred)
- Strong knowledge of survey principles, state regulations, and standards (e.g., ALTA/NSPS)
- Familiarity with construction and engineering workflows
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass DOT drug and alcohol screening, including random testing
- Willingness to travel for projects, including overnight stays as required
- Physical ability to work in outdoor environments and varied terrain
