What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Infrastructure Engineer position at London Approach?
We are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and management of enterprise-scale IT systems across Microsoft, VMware, and Linux environments. This individual will be responsible for Active Directory architecture, virtualization platform design, hybrid cloud networking, Linux server administration, and enterprise endpoint management.
The ideal candidate brings both deep technical expertise and strategic vision, capable of handling mission-critical incidents, building business cases for leadership, and aligning infrastructure with long-term organizational goals. This is a hands-on engineering role that also requires strong communication skills, ITIL-aligned process thinking, and the ability to act decisively in high-pressure situations.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the full IT infrastructure lifecycle from requirements gathering and planning to deployment, monitoring, and decommissioning.
- Design and manage Active Directory forest/domain architectures, including multi-forest trusts, DNS design, replication, and secure Group Policy strategies.
- Lead virtualization initiatives for high-availability workloads, comparing and implementing VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V solutions for SQL clusters and other mission-critical systems.
- Engineer and support Linux platforms, including zero-downtime patching with Ksplice and Oracle Linux kernel management.
- Architect and implement hybrid cloud connectivity (Azure ExpressRoute, AWS Direct Connect) with secure segmentation, routing, DNS resolution, and traffic flow controls.
- Troubleshoot and optimize Microsoft Intune/Autopilot deployments, ensuring reliable device enrollment and configuration compliance.
- Act as a technical lead during disaster recovery and incident response, isolating threats, executing recovery frameworks, and coordinating across IT, cybersecurity, and business leadership.
- Partner with executive leadership to build business cases for infrastructure investments, clearly communicating risks, costs, and opportunities to non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications Desired
- 10 years of IT infrastructure engineering experience across Microsoft (AD, Intune, Windows Server), VMware vSphere, and Linux (Oracle/Red Hat) platforms.
- Expertise in Active Directory design, DNS, replication, and GPO management for large, multi-forest environments.
- Strong background in virtualization and storage technologies (VMware HA/FT, Hyper-V clustering, SQL Server HA, enterprise SAN/HCI).
- Demonstrated ability to design and manage hybrid cloud architectures in Azure and AWS.
- Hands-on experience with endpoint management, automation, and scripting (Intune, Autopilot, PowerShell).
- Familiarity with disaster recovery planning, incident management frameworks, and ITIL-based processes.
- Excellent communication skills with proven ability to influence technical and executive audiences.
- Relevant certifications strongly preferred: Microsoft Azure/Server, VMware VCP-DCV, Linux/Oracle certifications.
