The Senior Payroll Specialist is responsible for overseeing and processing the company’s payroll operations with accuracy, timeliness, and compliance. This role serves as a subject matter expert on payroll processes, tax regulations, and system functionality. The Senior Payroll Specialist partners closely with HR, Finance, and department leaders to ensure seamless payroll administration, resolve complex issues, and support continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and experienced in managing multi-state or high-volume payrolls.

Salary: $65,000 - $75,000
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing for multi-state employee populations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Lead payroll audits, reconciliations, and pre-/post-payroll review to identify discrepancies and ensure data integrity.
- Process special payroll transactions including bonuses, commissions, retroactive pay, garnishments, child support orders, and other wage assignments.
- Maintain payroll records, tax documentation, and employee data within the payroll system.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll inquiries, providing expert-level support and issue resolution.
- Collaborate with HR on onboarding, terminations, benefits deductions, and leave-of-absence pay coordination.
- Prepare and submit payroll-related financial reports, journal entries, and account reconciliations for Finance.
- Assist with year-end processes including W-2s, payroll tax filings, and system updates.
- Identify and implement process improvements, system enhancements, and automation opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, internal controls, and payroll best practices.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- 4–6 years of progressive payroll experience; multi-state payroll experience strongly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and wage/hour compliance (FLSA).
- Proficiency with payroll systems such as ADP Workforce Now, Workday, UKG, Paychex, or similar.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets.
- Strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification is a plus.
