Job Summary: Controls Engineers collaborate with internal team members to execute control system development on schedule, based on a thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical technical specifications. They are capable of working independently, working on longer term projects under supervision, conducting testing, troubleshooting, and collaborating with technical or non-technical colleagues through project execution as needed. The individual in this role will focus on the up front, initial phases of the New Product Development (NPD) lifecycle including up front design definition, supporting proof of concept prototyping, and creating BOM's / drawings as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Assist with the design and development of early-stage control system prototypes for new product concepts.
  • Support the creation of high-level control strategies, software frameworks, and system schematics to support future production development.
  • Develop and test functional prototypes integrating sensors, actuators, and control logic (hardware and software).
  • Assist with the creation of clear, organized, and well-documented code, diagrams, and design artifacts for handoff to downstream engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with a cross functional team (e.g., software developers, electrical engineers) to accelerate concept validation.
  • Stay ahead of emerging trends and tools in control systems, automation, and embedded technologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This role has no direct reporting responsibilities
  • Able to provide basic technical leadership in guiding cross functional peers through portions of the NPD process

Qualifications and Skill Requirements:

  • Proficient in creating, reading, and interpreting electrical schematics
  • Proficient in PLC programming (multiple systems, but AB is primary), HMI configurations, and SCADA systems
  • Proficient in Controls and Electrical Engineering fundamentals
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and address project issues proactively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with package sortation, unit handling conveyor, or other related products and its associated control systems preferred.
  • Proficient in NEC, Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery, and UL regulatory compliance
  • Ability to maintain positive and professional working relationships with all staff at all levels/functions of organization

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of experience in mechanical, electrical or control systems engineering, with a proven track record in managing project schedules, scope, and change orders.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and customer specifications. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholders using English.
  • Excellent math skills are required. Individuals in this position must be able to perform engineering calculations employing algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as required.
  • Proficient with Auto CAD Electrical and/or E-Plan
  • Proficient with Rockwell Studio 5000
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. Employee spends time on shop floor, which could be significant portions of the day at times and require lifting up to 50 lbs. This role also requires spending time sitting in front of a computer.

Travel Demands:

  • This position may require occasional travel to sites in the field, often with little notice, including weekends and holidays in some cases.

Work Environment:

  • The employee works in the office but does have frequent interaction with personnel on the shop floor. Typical workdays are split between the two environments but can sometimes be skewed heavily towards one or the other depending on work content at any given time. The employee may also be required to travel occasionally to work in customers' plants or at suppliers. In plants, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed but does not require hearing protection in most areas. This position is on site in Port Clinton, OH.
