Job Summary: Controls Technicians assist in the testing, evaluation, and specification of new or existing company products. Individuals in this position are comfortable working virtually in a CAD, Drawing, or ERP environment as well as with their hands in a testing or production environment. Controls Engineering Technicians are capable of working independently to accomplish many tasks. This role is focused heavily on the rapid prototyping and testing of new products in the R&D space.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)
- Conduct evaluation of new products / concepts typically (but not exclusively) in the early part of the NPD process
- Test functional prototypes integrating sensors, actuators, and control logic (hardware and software).Troubleshooting of prototypes and test pieces
- Support the wiring and building of prototypes for new product development
- Develop, document, and conduct training for testing protocols
- Modify or update wiring schematics or other technical drawings
- Create / update bills of material and routings for use in cost estimates and manufacturing
- Collaborate with a cross functional R&D team (e.g., software developers, electrical engineers) to accelerate concept validation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This role has no direct reporting responsibilities
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Hands on and unafraid to dive into problem solving in many different environments
- Working knowledge of controls hardware, wiring of control panels, wiring of controls devices
- Working knowledge of accessing and making updates to wiring diagrams / technical drawings
- Working knowledge of ERPs (SyteLine is preferred) as well as PLM or PDM Systems
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70, National Electric Code, and NFPA 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical control circuits
- General working knowledge of PLC, HMI, and PC based control hardware and software.
- Familiarity with conveyors and material handling systems is preferred but not a requirement
- Ability to maintain positive and professional working relationships with all staff at all levels/functions of organization
Education and Experience:
- Associate's degree in electrical engineering or a related field
- 0-5 years' experience in an applicable engineering field
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and customer specifications.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholders using English.
- Basic math skills are required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Outlook
- Proficient with AutoCAD Electrical and/or E-Plan
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. Employee spends time on shop floor, which could be significant portions of the day at times and require lifting up to 50 lbs. This role also requires spending time sitting in front of a computer.
Travel Demands:
- This position may require occasional travel to live sites, often with little notice, including weekends and holidays in some cases.
Work Environment:
- The employee works in the office but does have frequent interaction with personnel on the shop floor. Typical workdays are split between the two environments but can sometimes be skewed heavily towards one or the other depending on work content at any given time. The employee may also be required to travel occasionally to work in customers' plants or at suppliers. In plants, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed but does not require hearing protection in most areas. This position is on site in Port Clinton, OH.
