POSITION

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a dynamic and student-centered High School Library Media Specialist who will build strong relationships and promote a culture of reading, inquiry, and learning.

The ideal candidate will serve as an instructional partner and information specialist, collaborating with teachers to support student learning through research, literacy development, and access to high-quality resources. This educator will guide students in developing strong reading habits, critical thinking skills, and the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. In partnership with staff, the media specialist will support classroom instruction and help ensure all students have access to engaging, standards-aligned learning experiences.

This role requires a professional who creates a welcoming, inclusive, and well-managed media center that serves as a hub for students and staff. We are looking for someone who is collaborative, organized, and passionate about connecting students with books, ideas, and opportunities to grow as learners. Additionally, someone who takes a forward-thinking approach to student technology use for research, learning, and creation.

District Overview

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K – post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $180 million, with a state funding of $10,000 per pupil.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following represents the minimum qualifications for this position. The District reserves the right to waive any qualification at its discretion.

  • Valid Michigan K–12 Library Media (ND) certification
  • Master's degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting high levels of learning for all students
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with teachers and administrators
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a school library/media center setting, preferably at the secondary level
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with teachers to support instruction, research, and literacy development across content areas
  • Experience fostering a culture of reading and student engagement with literature
  • Knowledge of information literacy, research practices, and strategies to support students in evaluating and using information effectively
  • Experience supporting inquiry-based learning and student research projects
  • Familiarity with collection development, resource curation, and management of library systems
  • Experience using data and feedback to inform programming, resource selection, and student support
  • Demonstrated ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, and well-organized media center environment

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and well-organized media center environment that encourages reading, inquiry, and independent learning
  • Implement and support the school's library media program in alignment with district goals and building priorities
  • Develop, organize, and manage the library media center to ensure equitable and consistent access for students and staff
  • Curate, evaluate, and maintain a diverse and relevant collection of print and digital resources that support curriculum, student interests, and literacy development
  • Promote information literacy by teaching students how to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively across a variety of formats (print, digital, and multimedia)
  • Provide direct instruction and support to students in research skills, resource selection, and effective use of library systems and tools
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate research, literacy, and information skills into content area instruction
  • Support and promote a culture of reading by guiding students in book selection and providing opportunities for independent reading and exploration
  • Assist teachers and administrators with instructional planning, curriculum support, and effective use of instructional materials and resources
  • Provide support and guidance to staff in accessing and utilizing instructional resources and tools to enhance teaching and learning
  • Participate in curriculum and school improvement efforts through collaboration, consultation, and committee involvement as appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with copyright laws, acceptable use policies, and district guidelines related to information access and use
  • Maintain accurate records and inventory of library materials, instructional resources, and related equipment
  • Oversee the ordering, organization, circulation, and maintenance of library and instructional materials
  • Support schoolwide assessment processes as appropriate, including coordination and distribution of materials
  • Provide additional academic support and enrichment opportunities for students as part of the school's intervention and support systems when appropriate
  • Maintain professional growth through ongoing learning aligned to district priorities and the evolving role of school libraries
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building administrator(s)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association. The deadline for applications is May 18, 2026 for consideration for the 2026-27 school year.
