Position Purpose

Leads and manages the high school media program to support advanced literacy, research skills, digital citizenship, and instructional collaboration. Provides equitable access to print and digital resources and partners with teachers to integrate information literacy into the curriculum in accordance with district procedures and applicable law.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Operate and supervise the high school media center in alignment with district goals and Georgia Standards of Excellence.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive media program that promotes reading engagement, research proficiency, digital literacy, and ethical use of information.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and deliver instruction in research methods, source evaluation, citation practices, and academic integrity.
  • Provide direct instruction to students on information literacy, digital citizenship, and responsible technology use.
  • Support students in conducting research projects, capstone assignments, and other curriculum-based inquiry tasks.
  • Evaluate, select, and maintain print and digital collections that support curriculum, diverse learners, and postsecondary readiness.
  • Maintain an efficient system for cataloging, circulation, inventory control, and technology resource management.
  • Manage the media center budget in accordance with district fiscal procedures and internal controls.
  • Supervise and evaluate media center support personnel, as assigned.
  • Promote literacy initiatives and foster a culture of independent reading within the school community.
  • Ensure compliance with copyright law, intellectual property standards, FERPA, IDEA, Section 504, and applicable State Board of Education rules.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to inventory, circulation, and program effectiveness.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and academically focused learning environment within the media center.
  • Participate in professional learning and maintain professional competence in media services and instructional technology.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal or designee consistent with certification and district expectations.

Equipment: Uses standard office and instructional technology equipment, including computers, library automation systems, digital media platforms, audiovisual equipment, and related instructional tools.

Travel Requirements: Travel to school district buildings, professional meetings, and events as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of high school curriculum and research expectations.
  • Knowledge of library science principles, digital resource management, and instructional technology integration.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, including FERPA, copyright law, IDEA, Section 504, and O.C.G.A. Title 20.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with instructional staff to support academic standards and student achievement.
  • Ability to manage budgets, collections, and technology resources responsibly.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional judgment and ethical conduct in accordance with GaPSC Ethics Rule 505-6-.01.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards: Work occurs in classroom and media center environments; requires standing, walking, supervision of students, handling of books and equipment, and use of instructional technology.

Certification/License

Qualifications

  • Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) certification as a Media Specialist.
  • Must meet certification requirements under O.C.G.A.
  • 20-2-200.
  • Must maintain GaPSC ethics clearance, fingerprinting, and background check requirements.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Master's degree and/or certification in Media Specialist or Library Media as required by GaPSC.

Experience: Prior teaching or secondary media experience preferred.
