Job Description – Alternative Education Program Director (TLC)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Contract Length: 12 Months (230 Days)

Salary Range: $98,000.70 - $112,499.90

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Alternative Education Program Director provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the Transitional Learning Center (TLC). The Director is responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of instructional, behavioral, and operational systems to support student success, ensuring alignment with Board policy, administrative procedures, and applicable federal and state laws.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for the overall operation and continuous improvement of the TLC program, including instruction, discipline, student support, and school climate.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors the School Improvement Plan based on student achievement data, program outcomes, and district priorities.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment in accordance with district safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Administers student discipline in accordance with Board policy, due process requirements, and applicable law.
  • Supervises, supports, and evaluates certified and classified staff in accordance with the district's evaluation system and timelines.
  • Recruits, selects, assigns, and retains qualified personnel in alignment with district procedures and staffing needs.
  • Promotes high expectations, professionalism, and a positive culture focused on student growth, accountability, and respect.
  • Uses student performance data and program evaluation results to guide instructional practices, interventions, and program improvements.
  • Coordinates and supports professional learning opportunities aligned to the needs of staff and students within the alternative education setting.
  • Ensures accurate student records, including grades, attendance, discipline, and progress toward promotion or graduation.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders to support student success and program effectiveness.
  • Engages advisory council members and stakeholders in program development, review, and improvement efforts.
  • Oversees the appropriate use, maintenance, and inventory of facilities, equipment, and resources.
  • Manages school-level budgets and ensures compliance with financial procedures, reporting requirements, and accountability standards.
  • Prepares and submits required reports to the Superintendent and district administration.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations, including those related to student discipline, alternative education, and student services.
  • Collaborates with district departments and community agencies to support student needs, including behavioral, academic, and social-emotional supports.
  • Maintains regular attendance and ensures continuity of operations by designating leadership coverage when absent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of alternative education models, student discipline practices, and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices at the middle and high school levels.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, including those related to student discipline, due process, and student services.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and program evaluation to support decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to lead and manage a complex school program serving diverse student needs.
  • Ability to analyze data and implement targeted strategies to improve student outcomes.
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, and support staff effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple responsibilities and timelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards: Work in standard office and school building environments.

Equipment: Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements: Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Qualifications

  • Holds or is eligible for Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) Educational Leadership Certification (P–12).
  • Valid driver's license or ability to provide reliable transportation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Education

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Educational Leadership or a related field required.
  • Specialist or doctoral degree preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience at the middle or high school level or within an alternative education setting.
  • Previous administrative or leadership experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting at-risk students, behavior management systems, and alternative education programming preferred.
