Responsibilities & Duties
The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner will be central to the management of complex, acutely ill, and often unstable patients across various inpatient units (ICU, PCU, specialized floors). Key responsibilities include:
High-Acuity Patient Management: Conduct comprehensive, focused assessments and manage rapid changes in clinical status for critically ill adults.
Procedures: Perform and document common invasive procedures relevant to acute care, such as central line placement, arterial line insertion, endotracheal intubation assistance, paracentesis, and thoracentesis (based on credentialing and experience).
Diagnosis and Intervention: Rapidly diagnose and initiate treatment for acute and life-threatening conditions (e.g., sepsis, shock, acute respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest).
Collaboration & Rounds: Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, consult with specialty teams, and effectively communicate patient status and treatment plans to the care team and families.
Transition of Care: Facilitate the transition of care for acutely ill patients from the ICU to step-down units or discharge, ensuring continuity and optimal outcomes.
Prescriptive Authority: Prescribe and manage advanced pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, including vasoactive agents, mechanical ventilation settings, and hemodynamic monitoring.
Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough medical records, adhering to critical care documentation and billing standards.
Requirements
- Education: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from an accredited program.
Licensure: Current, active, and non-probationary Georgia State Nurse Practitioner license.
Certification: Required: National certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP/AGACNP) from an accredited certifying body (e.g., ANCC, AACN).
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing Acute Care NP, or substantial 5 years RN experience in a high-acuity setting (ICU/ED) prior to NP licensure.
Certifications: Current ACLS and BLS certification.
DEA: Current DEA registration.
Preferred
- Experience in a large academic medical center or Level I Trauma Center.
Specialty-specific experience Neuro-Critical Care, Cardiothoracic ICU, Trauma Surgery.
Proficiency with EHR systems Epic, Cerner and order sets.
