Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Grants Accountant to join our finance team. This role is integral to managing the financial aspects of grant programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and maintaining accurate financial records. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in non-profit accounting, governmental accounting, and relevant financial software, with a focus on transparency and accuracy in financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial reports related to grant funding and expenditures
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, Securities law, regulatory reporting, and specific grant requirements
- Maintain detailed records of grant transactions, including journal entries, account reconciliation, and general ledger accounting
- Conduct balance sheet reconciliation and bank reconciliation to verify accuracy of financial data
- Manage accounts payable and receivable related to grants, ensuring timely processing and documentation
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis for grant projects
- Support internal and external audits through accurate documentation and reporting
- Utilize financial software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or PeopleSoft to record transactions and generate reports
- Ensure adherence to compliance standards
- Mentor junior staff on accounting procedures, best practices, and regulatory requirements
Requirements
- Proven experience in non-profit accounting, governmental accounting, or related fields with a strong understanding of financial concepts such as double entry bookkeeping, debits & credits, and accrual accounting
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks including GAAP
- Proficiency with accounting software including QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar platforms; experience with advanced tools like PeopleSoft is preferred
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and prepare detailed reports
- Knowledge of tax regulations, especially related to grants, tax experience is a plus
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Effective communication skills for collaboration across departments and mentoring team members
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent certification is preferred
