Position Summary
The Boarding Agent at John S. Connor is a part-time role that supports vessel port calls by physically boarding vessels upon arrival and departure at Norfolk ports. Under the direction and supervision of the Vessel Agents and Vessel Manager, this position assists with documentation, compliance, and onboard coordination. The role requires flexibility, as hours are non-conventional and based on vessel schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position is recruiting in Morehead City, NC or Wilmington, NC.
Key Responsibilities

Meet and board vessels upon arrival and/or prior to departure to represent the agency and support the vessel’s port call

Prepare, collect, and submit documentation required by U.S. government agencies, including U.S. Customs & Border Protection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Coast Guard

Assist with entering and clearing vessels through U.S. Customs & Border Protection

Obtain, verify, and distribute ship’s documents, crew lists, and related paperwork

Communicate with vessel masters, officers, and crew to relay instructions and gather required information

Support vessel agents with cargo documentation and other port call requirements as needed

Coordinate with terminal personnel and other service providers during vessel boarding, as applicable

Perform duties during after-hours, weekends, and holidays based on vessel arrival and departure schedules
Education
- High school diploma preferred, but not required
Experience
- Prior experience in vessel operations, port agency, or maritime logistics preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Reliable transportation and a good driving record required
- Availability to work 24 hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and time-sensitive operations effectively
