Contract Project Engineer – Facility Decommissioning | Kansas City Metro | On-Site
A global animal health company is looking for a hands-on Project Engineer to support the structured shutdown and decommissioning of multiple Kansas City area facilities. This is a 6-month contract with a mid-August start — and the need is urgent.
You'll be working directly alongside the Engineering Director as her primary support on the ground, coordinating third-party vendors, managing day-to-day shutdown activities, and keeping the project moving across two sites in the KC metro area. This is not a desk job. The right person is someone who's comfortable on the floor, adapts quickly when priorities shift, and takes ownership of whatever the project needs that day — whether that's chasing down a vendor quote or walking a site with an HSE team.
What you'll be doing:
- Coordinating vendor activity across active decommissioning sites — getting quotes, submitting PO requests, following up on invoices, and serving as the day-to-day point of contact on the ground
- Reviewing vendor LOTO procedures, flagging concerns, and escalating to the HSE team as needed
- Supporting systematic utility and equipment shutdowns across multiple buildings
- Keeping the Engineering Director informed with real-time status updates on shutdown progress and any blockers
- Using SAP for general asset and maintenance tracking
What you'll need:
- 3–5 years of experience in facilities, plant, or project engineering
- Comfortable working on the floor alongside vendors — not running the project remotely
- Working knowledge of LOTO and hazardous energy control concepts (Elanco trains on their own procedures — no specific certification required)
- General SAP familiarity
- Strong communication skills — this team runs on daily huddles and active Teams communication
