Project Accountant – Automotive Client
Location: Charlotte, NC
Schedule: On-site Monday–Wednesday, Remote Thursday–Friday
Salary: $75,000–$85,000 base, 10% target bonus

Position Summary
The Facilities Project Accountant is a key member of the Facility Development Department, responsible for managing all aspects of financial administration and fiscal management for the department’s project portfolio. This role ensures strict adherence to financial policy and procedures by all team members, including high-level stakeholders such as the Vice President of Facilities and the Senior Project Manager. The Project Accountant proactively communicates potential cost overruns and risks to management, coordinates and evaluates financial administration, project budgeting, and selected tax reporting, and is empowered to identify problems and recommend effective solutions. The position is characterized by a high degree of autonomy, requiring the individual to operate with minimal direction and supervision. Strong organizational skills, advanced cost analysis capabilities, and expert knowledge of accounting principles are essential for ensuring accurate and timely reporting. The role also demands demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Project Accounting Support: Provide comprehensive accounting support to project teams, including job set-ups, processing change orders, paying vendors and subcontractors, processing billings, reconciling accounts, closing out projects, and performing all required accounting activities.
- Project Setup and Maintenance: Set up projects in the accounting system, establish commitments for purchase contracts and agreements, and adjust original budgets to reflect approved change orders.
- Accounts Payable and Billing: Process accounts payable and billings, match purchase orders to vendor invoices, and ensure timely posting and payment of agency/city, contractor, subcontractor, and vendor invoices.
- Financial Oversight: Evaluate and manage project cash positions, especially regarding liabilities and unfunded work in place, and communicate any risk issues related to cash position or unapproved/unfunded change order work.
- Issue Resolution: Respond to and resolve contractor, subcontractor, and vendor issues in coordination with the Controller, Project Team, payroll staff, and other relevant parties.
- Project Close-Out: Ensure all accounting activities are closed upon project completion and that all records are in proper order.
- Vendor Management: Set up vendors, track discounts, and initiate stop payments on checks to contractors/subcontractors or vendors if necessary.
- Cash Receipts and Escrow: Enter and post cash receipts and prepare/maintain escrow agreements for security deposits as needed.
- Documentation and Internal Controls: Maintain internal control safeguards, ensure all accounting records are electronically filed, and manage document control through scanning/uploading.
- Reporting and Collaboration: Provide monthly accurate cost-to-date and commitment reports to senior stakeholders. Collaborate with other departments to provide reports, cost transfers, and other data as needed.
- Meetings and Compliance: Attend monthly Capital Improvement Program (CIP) meetings with the Finance Department, ensuring all records are current and accurate. Provide financial records to the tax department as required.
- General Office Management: Perform miscellaneous office management tasks and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and advanced accounting skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Timberline software is a plus.
- Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; able to make sound decisions under tight deadlines.
- Proficient in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and common communication tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Office, Outlook).
- Three to five years of administration/accounting experience; experience with large-scale construction projects is advantageous.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Corporate office environment within the Facility Development Department.
- Physical demands include regular periods of sitting, hand and finger use, reaching, talking, and hearing.
