Senior Mine Planning Engineer
A growing U.S.-based mining operation is seeking an experienced Mine Planning Engineer to play a key role in optimizing short, medium, and long-term mine plans for a complex open pit operation.
This is a high-impact position focused on maximizing ore quality, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the broader technical and commercial success of the site. The role offers strong visibility across mine leadership and the opportunity to influence everything from pit design and sequencing through to drill & blast, ground control, and mine-to-mill reconciliation.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and optimize short to long-term mine plans for complex ore bodies
• Design pit phases, sequencing, waste dumps, stockpiles, and haul road strategies
• Collaborate closely with geology, metallurgy, and operations teams to maximize ore recovery and reduce dilution
• Support drill & blast design, blasting reviews, wall controls, and ground stability strategies
• Conduct production, equipment, and mine efficiency studies to improve productivity and cost performance
• Lead or support capital projects and mine improvement initiatives
• Monitor KPIs, production reconciliation, and operational compliance
• Utilize leading mine planning software to model and assess multiple mining scenarios
• Mentor junior technical staff while remaining hands-on with operational teams
Ideal Background:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline
• 5 years of mine planning experience in open pit operations
• Strong experience with drill & blast, pit optimization, and ground control
• Proficiency with mine planning software such as Surpac, Whittle, MineSched, Micromine, or Talpac
• Experience working with sulfide and/or oxide ore bodies preferred
• Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance ore quality, cost, and production outcomes
• Previous exposure to contractor management and site-based operational support highly desirable
