Job Summary: The CNC Operator/Programmer operates and/or programs CNC machining equipment to produce machined parts out of metal (Steel, Aluminum, others as necessary) for IEA based company products.  The CNC Operator/Programmer receives specific work assignments under limited supervision and resolves most problems, including creating programming, programming changes, independently.  All work is subject to final inspection and test to ensure that the parts meet established specifications and to reduce scrap and control excess labor and material expense.  The CNC Operator/Programmer must practice and adhere to the Company’s Six Sigma and 6s principles.  In addition, this individual will be expected to perform other Fabrication duties based on the Company’s production needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties assigned as necessary:

  • Design and develop programs for CNC equipment including G/N coding.
  • Set-up, check programs and operate NC and CNC equipment to perform various high tolerance machining of parts.
  • Arrange, mount and secure tooling. Mount, align and secure holding fixtures or locate, support and secure work piece in absence of fixturing. 
  • Set stops; calibrate fixturing to fixture and work positions, tooling, clearance, speeds feeds, etc.  Adjust machine or console to correct deviations from program specifications.  Recognize, report and correct errors. 
  • Recommend tooling applications and operational sequences to assist in developing practical programming for new and unusual machining requirements. 
  • May set up for and instruct other Machine operators of lower classification diagnose operating difficulties and make adjustments.
  • Work from detailed and involved part drawings (blueprints) and specifications. 
  • Use a variety of precision measuring instruments. Reviews job orders (written or verbal) and determines material needs.
  • Inspects fins for imperfections and ensures parts meet product specifications.
  • Cleans and maintains work area, equipment and other tools of the trade (daily).
  • Ensures the raw materials are safely and securely stored to prevent damage or theft.
  • Works in a safe manner at all times.
  • Ensures that all work is done in accordance with and adheres to IEA’s ISO and Quality standards.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance as well as coolant checks.
  • Completes related paperwork concerning parts.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Maximum lifting requirement (pounds): 100 with assistance(infrequently), 50 (occasionally), 25 (frequently).
  • Maximum moving requirement (pounds): 100 with assistance
  • Maintaining physical condition is necessary for the following: Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, and twisting upper body; occasional climbing or sitting.
  • Working at heights off the ground up to 15 feet.
  • Vision requirements: Close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception.

 

 

 

Work Environment:

  • Work location: Metal Fabrication Department.
  • Exposure to low level mists, airborne particles, heat (weather) conditions, toxic/caustic chemicals (coolants), moving mechanical parts/equipment, sharp materials.
  • Personal protective equipment requirement: Company-supplied, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves and ear protection.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Key skills, abilities and knowledge: 
    • Ability to read and understand job requirements, shop drawings, bills of material and blueprints.
    • Ability/Knowledge to read and write G/N coding.
    • Knowledge of properties of various grades of metals (OJT).
    • Skill in operating and maintaining CNC/NC and standard machinery and related tools of trade (OJT).
    • Understands SPC (OJT).
    • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to follow safe work practices.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others.
  • Experiential: Five or more years of CNC Machinist
  • Educational: Related technical training, programming (high school or beyond) is essential.
  • Certificates, Licenses: Forklift operator certification is desirable but not essential.
