What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Proofreader position at HumanEdge?
We are seeking a detail-oriented experienced Legal Proofreader to join our client as per needed for weekend and evening shifts in downtown NYC. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing a variety of legal documents (including pleadings and transactional paperwork) to ensure they are error-free, well-organized, and formatted according to firm standards. You will check for proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax, as well as ensure consistency across documents.
Key Responsibilities
- Proofread Documents: Review legal documents, including court filings and agreements, to correct grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors.
- Format & Style Consistency: Ensure documents comply with firm-specific style guides, including citation formats.
- Content Accuracy: Verify the accuracy of defined terms, cross-references, and Table of Authorities.
- Quality Improvement: Suggest improvements to readability, word choice, and sentence structure.
- Structure & Logic: Review documents for logical flow and internal consistency.
- Drafting Support: Utilize Microsoft Word Track Changes and PDF markup tools to mark-up documents clearly.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or a related field preferred
- Experience in legal writing, proofreading, or a similar professional environment.
- Extremely high attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and familiarity with standard proofreading symbols.
- Knowledge of legal terminology and the specific industry.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with AP or Chicago style guides.
