Job Title: Electrical Engineer
Location: On-site – Los Alamos, NM
Short Summary about Job:
This role is responsible for overseeing the site's Electrical Safety Program, providing expert-level electrical safety support, and serving as the primary point of contact for electrical safety-related concerns. The position provides electrical safety support to construction projects, working directly with project managers, craft, work planners, and field professionals to ensure effective implementation of safe electrical work practices, conducting incident investigations, leading safety assessments, and collaborating with various teams to ensure compliance with safety standards. The position requires advanced knowledge of electrical engineering and safety protocols, and candidates must have excellent communication, collaboration, leadership, and technical problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary point of contact on electrical safety and administer the site's Electrical Safety Program.
- Act as a resource for employees and managers regarding electrical safety concerns.
- Conduct incident investigations and determine root causes, developing corrective actions as necessary.
- Perform workplace condition inspections to identify electrical hazards in various environments.
- Lead reviews of Integrated Work Documents (IWD) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Contribute to the development of codes, standards, and specifications for electrical equipment safety.
- Provide advanced support to engineers/scientists in solving complex technical problems.
- Participate in the evaluation of controlled items and services for compliance with electrical safety requirements.
- Perform calculations to determine electrical severity scores for incidents.
- Develop written electrical safety policies, procedures, and design standards.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to perform energy calculations, including arc flash calculations, in a system engineer or distribution engineer capacity; experience evaluating models in SKM; working knowledge as a master electrician or code interpreter; and ability to identify hazards involving low voltage (up to 1000 volts). Fiber optics experience alone does not meet this need.
- BS and 7 years of field experience (or equivalent combination of education and/or experience).
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q level security clearance.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical safety standards including NFPA, IEEE, and OSHA, particularly NFPA 70E.
- Experience with electrical engineering/technology in various applications such as low voltage AC and DC systems.
- Significant experience with personal computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated expert communication and organizational skills for presenting complex technical information.
- Ability to pass Radiological Worker II training.
