Project Accountant

About the Role
A well-established New York-based developer, builder, and property manager is seeking a Project Accountant to support multiple active construction projects. This role works closely with project leadership to ensure accurate job costing, billing, cash flow forecasting, and financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage project accounting for multiple construction projects, including job cost tracking, cost coding, budget updates, owner billings, subcontractor payments, and monthly reporting.
- Review contracts, funding requirements, schedules of values, and billing terms to ensure compliance with project accounting procedures.
- Prepare monthly owner requisitions and supporting schedules for submission to owners and lenders.
- Collaborate with project teams to review and process subcontractor payment applications, invoices, and change orders within the project management system.
- Monitor project management and ERP integrations to ensure accurate recording of budgets, commitments, costs, and requisitions.
- Record owner change orders and maintain complete project accounting records.
- Prepare budget-to-actual analyses, general conditions reports, and other financial reporting for management review.
- Develop and update project cash flow forecasts and discuss funding needs with project leadership.
- Process subcontractor payments and perform monthly account reconciliations.
- Identify and communicate budget variances, billing discrepancies, and other project accounting concerns.
- Assist with the training and development of junior project accounting staff.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Two to five years of accounting experience, with construction or project accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of general ledger accounting, receivables, payables, cash management, and reconciliations.
- Advanced Excel skills required.
- Experience with Sage Intacct, Procore, or comparable construction accounting systems is a plus.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and safely access active construction sites as needed.
