About the Opportunity
A growing real estate investment and asset management firm is seeking an experienced Controller to lead financial operations across a diverse real estate portfolio. This role sits at the intersection of property accounting and investment-level oversight, requiring strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and the ability to partner closely with asset management, finance, and third-party property management teams.
The Role
The Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations while providing strategic financial oversight across the firm’s portfolio. This individual will act as the primary authority on property and investment accounting, ensuring accurate reporting, strong controls, and meaningful financial insights to support asset-level decision-making and long-term performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage internal accounting staff and third-party property accounting teams, ensuring accurate, timely, and consistent financial reporting.
- Own Yardi system administration and develop custom reporting to support property- and investment-level analysis.
- Partner with asset management and operations teams on the preparation, monitoring, and analysis of property and investment budgets.
- Review monthly financial statements and balance sheets for each asset, ensuring alignment with budgets, underwriting assumptions, and investment objectives.
- Provide actionable financial insights to support asset management strategies and business plan execution.
- Maintain and enforce the monthly property accounting close calendar, ensuring all reporting deadlines are met.
- Serve as the internal subject matter expert for all property and investment accounting matters.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA preferred.
- 8 years of experience in multifamily or commercial real estate property accounting, with exposure to investment-level financial oversight.
- 5 years of hands-on experience with Yardi Voyager and strong intermediate Excel skills.
- 5 years of leadership experience managing accounting teams in a portfolio-driven environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across internal teams and external partners.
Preferred Experience
- Background in public accounting (audit and/or tax).
- Experience overseeing multifamily or commercial real estate investment portfolios with a focus on financial performance and asset management.
