Mechanical Design Engineer – New Product Development

About the Opportunity
Our client, an established manufacturer of specialized tools and equipment, is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a newly formed product development group.
This is a strong opportunity for an early-career mechanical engineer who wants hands-on involvement throughout the full product-development process. You’ll help take new products and machines from initial concept through design, analysis, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and release.
The ideal candidate has a strong mechanical aptitude, experience with 3D CAD, and an understanding of how manufactured products are designed and built. Hands-on manufacturing, internship, co-op, or project experience is highly valued.
What You’ll Do
- Design and engineer new products and machines for manufacturing
- Create and refine 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and design documentation
- Analyze designs for strength, function, manufacturability, lifespan, and overall performance
- Perform engineering calculations involving areas such as strength, fatigue, gears, and chain drives
- Support prototype fabrication, assembly, testing, and design validation
- Work with manufacturing personnel to ensure designs can be produced efficiently and accurately
- Identify and resolve technical issues during development and following product launch
- Help coordinate field-testing units and collect feedback from customers
- Assist sales personnel with product-related technical questions
- Support the development of technical manuals and product documentation
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD and solid-modeling software
- Understanding of mechanical engineering analysis and design calculations
- Knowledge of common manufacturing methods such as welding, sheet-metal fabrication, machining, casting, assembly, and coatings
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage assigned projects with limited supervision
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship, co-op, academic project, or professional experience involving product or machine design
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, machining, or assembly environment
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, DraftSight, or other 2D CAD software
- Basic electrical engineering knowledge
- Experience building, testing, troubleshooting, or improving mechanical products
