Position Summary
The Special Projects Manager serves as the lead for high-impact, cross-functional initiatives across the O&M and Field Services organization. This role is responsible for driving complex technical and operational projects that fall outside of standard field execution, including performance improvement efforts, major corrective actions, commissioning support, and strategic owner-driven initiatives.
This position acts as a senior escalation point for complex system issues from array to POI, coordinating internal teams, external vendors, and OEMs to deliver efficient, cost-effective solutions. Unlike traditional technical services structures, this role operates as a lean, agile function, leveraging existing Special project Leads, HV/MV, and vendor resources to execute specialized work.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead execution of special projects including major corrective actions, performance recovery efforts, and retrofit/repower initiatives to bring under performing assets back to nameplate values.
- Serve as Managerial escalation point for Special projects leads and manage overall output of the team
- Coordinate with Field Ops, HV/MV, ROC, and external vendors/OEMs to resolve issues efficiently without using internal dedicated site service teams
- Drive root cause analysis (RCA) and implement long-term corrective actions to improve system reliability and performance
- Support business development and new service offerings by defining scope, estimating costs, and supporting proposals for special projects work
- Identify and execute cost-saving initiatives including vendor optimization, self-perform strategies, and process improvements
- Review system data (SCADA, inverter logs, event files) to diagnose issues and guide field execution
- Develop and standardize processes, procedures, and playbooks for recurring technical challenges
- Support pre-COD activities including inspections, testing, and turnover readiness
- Act as liaison with OEMs and third-party providers for specialized repairs, warranties, and advanced troubleshooting
- Provide project reporting to leadership, including cost, performance impact, and execution timelines
- Assist in developing training strategies and knowledge transfer to Field Operations teams
- Promote and enforce safe work practices across all project activities
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 5 years of experience in solar, BESS, or power generation O&M
- Strong experience with inverter systems, SCADA, and plant performance analysis
- Proven ability to manage cross-functional projects without direct reports
- Experience working with multiple OEMs and vendor coordination
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis capabilities
- Experience in commissioning, repowering, or large-scale corrective work preferred
- Excellent communication skills with ability to interface with owners, executives, and field teams
- Ability to travel extensively to project sites
- Lifting and carrying items greater than 50 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions for extended periods
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks alongside field crews as needed
- Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends, based on project demands
