Job Responsibilities/Duties
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste.

H2C's key missions are to remove waste from Single Shell Tanks (SSTs) and place in Double Shell Tanks (DSTs), and then treat waste from DSTs to stage for eventual transfer to the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) for future vitrification – a process of turning the waste into glass for future disposal. H2C is the prime contractor responsible for Hanford Tank Farms and is a large company of 2,500 employees.

H2C seeks an environmental specialist who will provide environmental field support for the following:

• Support the H2C Environmental Protection Training program and serve as a qualified training instructor for Environmental Protection Department training courses. Primary areas of responsibility will be serving as a instructor and program point of contact, duties associated with the company's Dangerous Waste Training Plans, and training records as relevant to compliance, assessments, and inspections.
• Serve as the primary program owner and point of contact for the Environmental Protection Department's corrective action program, reports, and associated requirements.
• Serve as a secondary inspection coordinator, or primary when requested, as well as providing back-up and support to the company's overall compliance inspection and external agency visit program, processes, and requirements.
• As needed, create, review/comment and/or at times approve, various technical documents, work instructions/packages, and procedures.
• Upon request, provide support, including in the field and posted radiological zones, to H2C's internal assessment program and requirements, compliance, and other programmatic aspects. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment).
• Support records management.
• Obtain and then must maintain all required certifications, training, medical, and qualifications necessary to performing assigned work scope.
• Assist and at times may lead, in developing tools and processes to verify compliance of requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications.

Responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist include but are not limited to following activities:

Provide day-to-day environmental support to ensure compliance with environmental policies, requirements, and procedures.

Provide environmental input in the Corrective Action Program.

Oversee field activities, such as facility inspections and other related activities, to ensure activities are compliant with current permits and other regulatory requirements. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment).

Perform surveillances and compliance inspections to provide organizational feedback on environmental performance.

Prepare records/documentation for regulatory inspections or document requests.

Maintain all required certifications and qualifications.

Assist in developing tools and processes to verify compliance with requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications

Required Qualifications
Grade 15:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in related field and 1 year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Grade 16:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in related field and 2 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

• Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 17:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in related field and 4 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Desired Qualifications
-Knowledge of radioactive and mixed waste practices and requirements, (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, etc.).

• Experience with environmental regulatory agencies and compliance inspections.
• Experience with the DOE iCAS software and processes.
• Experience teaching, educating, training, or otherwise mentoring, especially on environmental requirements or processes.
• Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Experience in providing Environmental compliance support.
• Strong communication skills. Must be able to communicate with multiple disciplines (Operations, Project Management, Construction, Engineering, DOE, EPA, and State Regulatory Agencies), peers, and management.
• Background in construction, waste site remediation, or facility operations.
• Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.
• Radiological Worker II training.

Compensation & Benefits
In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.

Hiring Range Minimum: $82,000
Hiring Range Maximum: $124,788
