Our client is seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager to lead complex data migration initiatives. This role is critical in planning, executing, and delivering high-quality data migration projects from legacy systems to modern platforms (on-premise, cloud, or hybrid). The ideal candidate has a strong blend of technical depth, project management expertise, and stakeholder management skills to ensure migrations are completed on time, within budget, and with minimal risk to data integrity, security, and business operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end data migration projects, including discovery, planning, design, execution, testing, cutover, and post-migration support.
- Develop detailed project plans, timelines, resource allocation, risk registers, and mitigation strategies.
- Work closely with data architects, engineers, DBAs, analysts, and business stakeholders to define migration scope, requirements, and success criteria.
- Oversee data mapping, ETL/ELT processes, data cleansing, quality, transformation, and validation activities.
- Manage technical dependencies across systems, integrations, and third-party vendors.
- Ensure compliance with data governance, security, privacy (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, etc.), and regulatory requirements.
- Facilitate technical workshops, status meetings, and executive steering committee updates.
- Track and report on project KPIs, budget, schedule, risks, and issues using tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, or Smartsheet.
- Coordinate testing efforts including unit, integration, user acceptance, and performance testing.
- Manage change management, communication plans, and training related to the data migration.
- Conduct post-migration reviews, lessons learned, and ensure knowledge transfer to operations teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
- 5 years of project management experience, with at least 3 years specifically managing data migration or large-scale data transformation projects.
- Proven track record of successfully delivering complex data migrations (e.g., on-prem to cloud, database upgrades, ERP migrations, legacy system decommissioning).
- Strong technical knowledge of databases (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL), data platforms), and ETL tools
- Experience with data modeling, data quality frameworks, and migration methodologies (big bang, phased, parallel run, etc.).
