Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations for our real estate receivership practice and our property management portfolio. This role requires strong expertise in property management accounting, including budgeting, CAM reconciliations, owner reporting, cash management, cash flow forecasting and compliance. The Controller will lead the accounting team, ensure accurate financial reporting, and support leadership with strategic financial insights. This position will manage the relationship with 3rd party firm for a portion of the portfolio for which we outsource the accounting. In addition, this individual will be responsible for participating in client calls as needed to review financial results.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes for all managed properties.
- Prepare and review financial statements, operating reports, and variance analyses.
- Ensure timely and accurate owner/investor reporting across all assets.
- Manage cash flow, banking activity, and daily accounting operations.
- Oversee rent rolls, tenant ledgers, and lease administration reconciliation.
- Supervise CAM (Common Area Maintenance) calculations and annual reconciliations.
- Ensure accuracy of property-level budgeting, forecasting, and pro forma models.
- Handle property tax filings, insurance tracking, and escrow compliance.
- Support financial components of property acquisitions, dispositions, and refinancing.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory guidelines, and company policies.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting procedures for property operations.
- Coordinate and support annual audits and tax return preparation with external auditors.
- Manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team (AP, AR, Property Accountants).
- Ensure timely processing of payables, receivables, bank reconciliations, and tenant transactions.
- Establish clear expectations, workflows, and productivity standards.
- Oversee accounting system configuration and reporting (i.e. Yardi, AppFolio, MRI, RealPage, etc.).
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve reporting accuracy.
- Implement best practices in both corporate and property-level accounting.
- Work closely with Property Managers, Regional Managers, and Operations leaders.
- Partner with HR, Legal, and Operations on compliance, vendor management, and budgeting.
- Provide financial guidance for capital projects, maintenance planning, and operational improvements.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA or CMA preferred but not required.
- 10 years of accounting experience, with 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
- 5 years experience in property management or real estate accounting experience required (multifamily, commercial, mixed-use, REIT, or development).
- Strong knowledge of property management accounting cycles and revenue recognition.
- Proficiency in sophisticated real estate accounting software such as Yardi, AppFolio, MRI, RealPage, or similar.
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with reporting/analytics tools.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines.
- Strong ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality.
- Experience managing a portfolio of multiple properties or regions.
- Familiarity with Canadian property accounting (if applicable).
- Experience in both corporate and property-level financial reporting.
- Background in acquisitions, due diligence, or investor reporting.
