SUMMARY:

This part time position is primary responsible for maintaining the chemical laboratories and stockrooms, chemical and supply procurement and inventory, waste disposal, safety planning, and some maintenance of instruments and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Laboratory preparation (45%)
    • Make solutions and reagents as required. Set up equipment and glassware as needed.
  • General Chemistry (3-5 sections)
  • Organic Chemistry (2 sections)
  • Liberal Arts Chemistry (1 section)
  • Other upper level labs (usually 3 / semester including Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Environmental Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry)
  • Summer school Organic Chemistry (usually 2 sections simultaneously)
  • PAEMS (Pre-College Academic Experience in Math and Science)
  • Maintain inventory needed for laboratories (20%)
    • Order supplies / chemicals as needed. Coordinate with vendors for best prices and timely delivery.
    • Receive and organize chemicals and supplies
    • Maintain inventory databases (chemicals and supplies)
    • Financial management – budgeting, credit reports, purchase orders
  • Instrument maintenance (10%)
    • Preventive maintenance on TGA / DSC
    • Preventive maintenance on X-Ray Diffractometer
    • Preventive maintenance on other grant instruments planned
  • Instruments (10%)
    • Dispose / sell old instruments
    • Research small equipment / instrument needs for purchase
  • Waste Disposal (5%)
    • Contracting waste disposal
    • Disposal of chemicals we can do ourselves
  • Safety (5%)
    • Maintain SDS sheets
    • Maintain safety bulletin board
    • Help maintain chemical hygiene plan
  • General Lab Appearance (5%)
    • Oversee student workers to keep glassware clean and supplies available
    • Coordinate student worker budget
    • Coordinate student workers for laboratory assistants and general help


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities other than managing student workers.

  • Education and / or Experience - Bachelor's degree in a related major from a four-year college or university; or two to five years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee should have a basic knowledge of chemicals as he / she is responsible for ordering / disposing of chemicals. Lab skills are required as employee is responsible for making all solutions for all labs. Should also be a great multi-tasker, as many activities are concurrent.
  • Communication / Language - Requires effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to lead student workers.
  • Mathematical - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages. Concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Stoichiometry, dilutions, and sample prep calculations.
  • Reasoning - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to independently resolve problems.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - None required
  • Computer Literacy / General Office Equipment - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel. Word, Outlook), use of basic laboratory equipment (pH meters, Vernier probes, spectrophotometers).
