Position Summary
Career Readiness Learning Objectives:
- Communication: Student workers will communicate clearly and effectively within their respective roles. Those serving in laboratory preparation and office assistant positions will coordinate with the Department Laboratory Coordinator and the Department Chair or faculty members, respectively. Teaching assistants will maintain clear and effective communication with the laboratory instructors they support and will also provide guidance and mentorship to students during laboratory sessions.
- Critical Thinking: Student workers will use their knowledge of chemistry concepts and safety protocols to assist the laboratory coordinator, faculty members, and other student workers in solving problems that arise in the preparation process and/or instruction of students.
- Teamwork: Student workers will build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty members, laboratory coordinator, and other student workers to accomplish the common goals of preparing instructional labs and teaching enrolled students safely and efficiently.
- The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers student employment opportunities to support both laboratory and administrative functions. We provide three distinct types of positions, and most participants may serve in multiple roles depending on their interests and experience.
- Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants (TAs) are expected to attend all laboratory sessions for the course to which they are assigned. During each session, TAs support the overall operation and instruction of the lab by guiding students in proper laboratory techniques, reinforcing safety protocols, and ensuring that experimental procedures are followed accurately.
- Project Assistants. Project Assistants provide administrative and academic support to Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty and staff throughout the semester. They may be assigned to assist with specific projects or work directly with individual faculty members as needed. Typical tasks may include making photocopies, scanning documents, delivering materials across campus, and possibly assisting instructional support activities.
