Role Summary
As a School Bus Monitor, you work as a cohesive team with the Bus Driver to provide a safe, secure, and positive environment on the bus. Your primary focus is student management—assisting with safe boarding, securing safety restraints for our youngest learners (Head Start/Early Childhood), and proactively managing behavior to reduce driver distractions. You are the "eyes and ears" on the bus floor, ensuring that every student follows safety protocols while feeling supported.
Why You’ll Succeed (Qualifications)
- Mature Professionalism: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- The "Peace-Maker": You have experience in defusing confrontational situations and possess the tact, diplomacy, and good judgment to handle student and parent interactions with grace.
- Child Development Savvy: You have a genuine knowledge and understanding of school-age children and their developmental needs.
- Team-Oriented Mindset: You excel at working alongside a driver, providing the "assist" needed to keep the route efficient and safe.
- Physical Readiness: You are able to stand, walk, sit, and reach with ease. You must be able to kneel and crouch (to secure safety restraints) and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Your Impact (Key Duties)
- Safety Stewardship: Assist with daily inspections of the passenger area and ensure all Child Safety Restraints (CSR) are in perfect working order and properly secured.
- Climate Management: Monitor student behavior to create a calm atmosphere, resolving minor conflicts and using restorative strategies to keep students engaged and safe.
- Route Expert: Maintain a deep knowledge of your assigned route and the specific needs/stops of every student on board.
- Emergency Response: Act as a critical leader during emergency evacuations, assisting the driver and students in staying calm and moving quickly to safety.
- Accurate Reporting: Complete necessary Bus Referrals and Incident Reports with clarity and professionalism to keep building administrators informed of student progress.
