Responsibilities of an Medicare Specialist / Medicare Benefit Advisor

Help People Navigate Medicare. Build Relationships. Grow Your Business.


As an Independent Medicare Insurance Advisor, you'll help Medicare-eligible individuals understand their healthcare coverage options and make informed decisions based on their individual needs, prescriptions, budget, and priorities.


This is a consultative sales role for motivated professionals who enjoy helping people, building relationships, developing new business, and being rewarded for their results.


What You'll Do

Connect With Medicare-Eligible Clients – Develop new opportunities through outbound calling, lead follow-up, referrals, and other sales and marketing activities.

Conduct Personalized Medicare Consultations – Ask the right questions to understand each client's healthcare needs, prescription medications, preferred providers, budget, and coverage priorities.

Simplify Medicare – Explain Medicare in clear, easy-to-understand terms so clients can confidently evaluate their available options.

Compare Available Plan Options – Help clients evaluate available Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D Prescription Drug plans from contracted insurance carriers.

Guide Clients Through Enrollment – Assist eligible clients throughout the plan selection and enrollment process while providing professional, responsive service.

Build a Growing Medicare Client Base – Develop long-term relationships through consistent follow-up, excellent service, annual reviews, and referrals.

Conduct Annual Coverage Reviews – Stay connected with clients and help them review their coverage as their healthcare needs and available plan options change.

Develop Referral Opportunities – Build relationships with satisfied clients and community contacts to generate additional business.

Achieve Production Goals – Maintain the focus, discipline, and activity necessary to consistently achieve established sales and productivity expectations.

Maintain Medicare Compliance – Complete required training and carrier certifications and follow applicable CMS, Medicare, carrier, marketing, and enrollment requirements.

Requirements


To become an independent Medicare insurance advisor, you need to obtain a health insurance license, often a combined life and health license, while meeting age requirements and passing a background check. The process includes pre-licensing courses, state licensing exams, and annual training for specific products like Medicare Advantage plans.

Steps to Become a Medicare Advisor:

1. **Meet Eligibility Requirements:**

Be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

2. **Understand Licensing Requirements:**

Check your states insurance licensing division or the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) for specific details.


3. **Complete Pre-Licensing Education:**

Enroll in a course to prepare for the licensing exam.


4. **Pass the State Exam:**

Schedule and complete the state-administered licensing exam.


5. **Apply for Your License:**

Submit your application, including a background check and fingerprinting.


6. **Get Appointed with Carriers:**

Become appointed with the insurance companies for the Medicare plans you plan to sell.


7. **Complete Annual Certifications:**

Finish the required training and exams from Medicare carriers each year.


8. **Obtain Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance:**
