JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title: Journeyman Electrician 

Exemption Status: Nonexempt 

Reports To: Master Electrician  

Funding Source: General Fund 

Dept/School: Facilities 

Pay Grade: Facilities – 7

Primary Purpose: 

Under general supervision, maintain, repair, and install electrical systems, services, and equipment for the District. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all electrical systems and fixtures in District facilities.  

 

Qualifications: 

 

Education/Certification 

  • High School Diploma or GED, preferred 
  • Valid Texas Journeyman Electrician License, required 
  • Documented electrical courses from Trade School, preferred 
  • Valid Class C Texas driver’s license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills 

 

  • Knowledge and skills to qualify as an electrical journeyman in accordance with industry standards 
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits, wiring and operating principles of motors, current electrical codes and ordinances 
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and written reference material 
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of electrical staff 
  • Ability to follow and issue written and verbal instructions 
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations 
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems 
  • Ability to use hand and power tools 
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Ability to utilize technology resources relevant to position  

 

 

Experience 

 

Minimum three years of electrical industry experience; public education experience, preferred  

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

Maintenance and Repair 

 

  1. Perform preventative maintenance on electrical apparatuses, electrical fixtures, and all types of power systems. 
  1. Determine best approach to solving tasks after carefully evaluating work site to ensure safety for site occupants and/or facility users while project is underway. 
  1. Outline projects and work with minimal oversight. 
  1. Review and inspect assigned tasks to adequately order required materials and supplies for the job. 
  1. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and written reference material outlining the scope of various projects. 
  1. Install new equipment, including but not limited to conduit and outlets for circuitry, and classroom lighting; and perform required maintenance. 

Records and Reports 

  1. Record all materials and supplies used and man-hours accumulated on projects until scope of work is accomplished to keep supervisors informed on total job costs. 

Other 

  1. Provide ongoing guidance and on the job training for electrical helpers. 
  1. Serve on-call periodically for emergencies that occur at night, on weekends, and during holidays; and respond to pages and calls in a timely manner. 
  1. Exhibit behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; and serve as role model for staff and public. 
  1. Perform other duties as assigned by Facilities Administration, Managers and Foremen’s.  

Safety 

  1. Practice a high standard of work and site safety in the performance of all duties and abide by District policies and procedures. 
  1. Contributes to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.

Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical measuring and testing equipment; hand tools; power tools; light truck or van 

 

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions 

 

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving 

 

Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 55 pounds without assistance, more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance, on a daily basis 

 

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and on ladders or scaffolding; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, humidity, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, asbestos-containing materials, grease, oils, loud noises, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; occasionally work irregular or prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel 

 

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress and exercise reasoning and problem-solving under pressure
