Excel is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to oversee safety operations at our industrial maintenance job site in Plaquemine, LA. The Safety Manager will be responsible for maintaining a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with applicable OSHA and company requirements, and providing hands-on safety leadership for employees, supervisors, contractors, and subcontractors working at the facility.
This is a field-focused position requiring a visible and engaged presence in the work areas. The successful candidate will work closely with site management and craft personnel to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, conduct inspections, and ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on safety professional who is comfortable being in the field, interacting directly with craft employees and supervisors, and holding people accountable for safe work practices.
We are looking for someone who can build relationships while also being willing to address unsafe conditions immediately. The Safety Manager should be proactive, organized, dependable, and capable of working effectively in a fast-paced industrial maintenance environment.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary safety leader and point of contact for the Excel team at the job site.
Conduct daily job-site safety inspections and identify unsafe conditions or work practices.
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, Excel safety policies, site requirements, and applicable industry standards.
Support supervisors and employees with Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and pre-task planning.
Monitor maintenance activities and verify that appropriate safety procedures and controls are in place.
Lead and participate in daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, orientations, and training.
Oversee compliance with requirements involving:
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
Confined space entry
Hot work
Fall protection
Scaffolding
Respiratory protection
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Line breaking and energy isolation
Rigging and lifting operations
Excavation and other applicable maintenance activities
Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; assist with root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, training records, and incident reports.
Work with site leadership to develop and implement corrective and preventive measures.
Stop or suspend unsafe work when necessary and communicate concerns promptly to site management.
Participate in client safety meetings, audits, inspections, and compliance activities.
Help promote employee engagement and accountability for safe work practices.
Assist with emergency response planning and emergency drills.
Monitor contractor and subcontractor safety performance when applicable.
Provide coaching and mentoring to supervisors and employees regarding safe work practices.
Qualifications:
3–5 years of safety experience in industrial construction, maintenance, manufacturing, petrochemical, or a similar environment.
Experience working in an active industrial facility or maintenance environment.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial safety practices.
Experience conducting job-site inspections, safety meetings, incident investigations, and employee training.
Ability to recognize hazards and effectively communicate corrective actions to field personnel and management.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to work independently while maintaining close communication with site and company leadership.
Ability to wear required PPE and work in industrial environments.
Additional safety certifications such as CHST, ASP, CSP, or equivalent are preferred.
