Responsibilities
- Assist classroom teachers in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to each student’s unique needs.
- Support students with disabilities by providing hands-on assistance during lessons, activities, and routines.
- Facilitate communication using American Sign Language (ASL) or other augmentative communication methods as needed.
- Help create and adapt curriculum materials that promote literacy, math skills, social-emotional learning, and functional life skills.
- Manage classroom behavior through positive reinforcement strategies and effective behavior management techniques.
- Support early childhood development by engaging children in age-appropriate activities aligned with Montessori or preschool methodologies.
- Assist with lesson planning and curriculum development to ensure engaging and accessible learning experiences.
- Provide care and supervision during classroom activities, including toddler care and preschool routines.
- Maintain a safe, organized classroom environment that encourages exploration and independence.
- Collaborate with specialists such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and behavioral specialists to support student progress.
- Monitor student progress and document observations related to IEP goals and developmental milestones.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student achievements, challenges, and daily updates.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to all policies related to special education standards and disability accommodations.
Experience
- Prior experience working with children in educational or childcare settings is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of childhood development principles, early childhood education practices, and classroom management strategies.
- Experience working with students who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, or other special needs is desirable.
- Familiarity with IEP processes, behavior management techniques, literacy education, math instruction, and curriculum adaptation is advantageous.
- Private school experience or background in Montessori or preschool environments will be considered a plus.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn is beneficial for effective communication with students who use sign language.
