General Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Curae Center Program Director, the Special Education Teacher designs and provides a positive learning environment and delivers instruction to students at the Curae Center whose educational needs are primarily the result of significant behavior challenges. The Special Education Teacher leads the IEP team to develop data driven student learning and behavioral goals. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing curriculum and program strategies consistent with the student's learning level and mental health needs and continually assesses student progress towards IEP goals. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for working with team members to develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans and Emergency Response Protocols for students throughout the duration of the student's placement at Curae.

Assignment:
We are recruiting for a Special Education Teacher to serve the Curae Center for the 2026-2027 school year. The start date will be August 2026 and this position is full time, 185 days. 

Regular attendance required: This role relies on regular and reliable attendance to ensure consistency for our students and help support a positive, productive learning environment.

Salary:
The full salary range for this position is $57,898.00 - $109,132.00.Salary placement is based on education and certificated experience. 

Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:
  1. Select teaching strategies to implement IEP goals for students. Monitor and adjust teaching strategies to meet students' needs in collaboration with the mental health counselor and other Curae Center staff.
  2. Develop and write daily lesson plans that provide classroom, small group and one-on-one instruction to students. Conduct student assessments as needed.
  3. Monitors and records student progress, confers frequently with community agencies, consulting education staff, students, and as appropriate, with guardians concerning both academic and behavioral progress or concerns of all assigned students.
  4. Supervise the collection of performance data on student IEP goals and document progress on IEP online.
  5. Develop and adapt curriculum from general education curriculum. Coordinate with general education teacher to monitor student grades and progress.
  6. Provides for the daily supervision of classroom paraeducators, including training, assignment of tasks, and participates in required observations and evaluations. Write and conduct performance evaluations for classified staff with assistance from the Curae Program Director.
  7. Consult and collaborate with professionals and guardians regarding needs of special education students for assuring appropriate learning experiences.
  8. Maintain a safe classroom environment conducive to learning. Establish classroom management programs for students. Monitor and adjust individual behavior management plans for individual student needs.
  9. Communicate with students during instruction and interpersonal interaction using language structure, tone and body language that promotes positive behavior, conflict resolution and problem solving, effective power struggles and applies strategies for management of escalating behavior.
  10. Participate in transition activities related to students' transition to the next education or treatment setting including return to the students' local district, or discharge from the program.
  11. Work cooperatively with other teachers, administrators and Curae Center staff to place students in special education programs, provide for accommodations and modifications in the integrated setting as appropriate for each student.
  12. Participate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement classroom structures, routines, and safety plans to support students in gaining skills related to lagging skills.
Other Functions:
  1. Work cooperatively with local district and/or private agency administration staff.
  2. Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for students.
  3. Other duties as assigned.
 

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Washington teaching certificate with K-12 special education endorsement.
  2. Experience in writing individualized curriculum.
  3. Experience in developing, executing and adjusting behavior management programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Hold or be eligible to hold a middle level or secondary subject endorsement area.
  2. Teaching experience.
  3. Experience training and supervising paraeducators.
  4. Experience teaching children with disabilities.
 

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  1. Variety of settings including students' homes, office and school environment.
  2. Provide assistance and attend to the physical needs of students including moving and positioning students and assisting with personal hygiene needs, including but not limited to: tube feeding, catheterization, changing diapers, toileting.
  3. Sit, stand, stoop to attend to student's needs and to provide instruction. Strength and agility to assist physically impaired students.
Employment Requirements:
  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
