Secondary English Teacher 26-27 SY - Wishram

General Responsibilities

Wishram School District will have an opening for a Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. The position will serve middle school and high school students.
Wishram School District is a small rural district that values strong relationships between students, staff, and families. Teachers work closely with colleagues across grade levels and subject areas, and the small school environment allows educators to know their students well and provide meaningful support for student learning and growth. Enrollment in grades 6–12 is approximately 40 students, creating a learning environment where teachers truly know their students and can provide individualized attention. Class sizes are intentionally small and typically include only a handful of students, allowing teachers to build meaningful relationships with each learner and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs.. Wishram School has worked intentionally to maintain a school culture grounded in mutual respect, responsibility, and positive relationships between students and staff, contributing to a supportive and welcoming learning environment where both students and educators feel comfortable, respected, and able to focus on teaching and learning. Staff members have opportunities to collaborate, contribute ideas, and play an active role in shaping the educational program of the school.

Our school is located in the town of Wishram, Washington, in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge along the banks of the Columbia River. It is a short distance from The Dalles, Oregon and Goldendale, Washington. The community is rural and offers an ideal setting for those who enjoy outdoor recreation, close-knit communities, and the natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. The community is very supportive of the school and its staff.

Salary:  $55,346 – $104,319 annual base salary based on the 2025–2026 Wishram School District Certificated Salary Schedule for a 180-day contract, plus up to 9 additional contract days available above the base salary. Placement on the salary schedule is based on verified years of experience and educational attainment in accordance with district policy and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

This salary range reflects the 2025–2026 certificated salary schedule. The 2026–2027 certificated salary schedule has not yet been finalized and may be subject to change through the collective bargaining process.

Essential Functions/Other Functions

1. Plan, develop, and implement courses of instruction designed to support learning and achievement in English Language Arts.
2. Support Students in developing reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills aligned with Washington State ELA learning standards.
3. Work cooperatively with administration and staff to support and implement the district instructional program.
4. Provide an instructional environment that promotes student engagement, collaboration, and inclusive learning. 
5. Maintain accurate and appropriate student records and documentation. 
6. Teach the approved curriculum aligned with Washington State Learning Standards.
7. Keep parents informed of student progress through conferences, reports, and other communication. 
8. Establish and maintain a positive, well-managed classroom learning environment.
9. Work with students, staff, and community members in a professional and productive manner.
10. Supervise students in the classroom and on school premises as required.
11. Encourage students to develop respect for others and responsibility for contributing positively to the school community.
12. Participate in professional growth and development opportunities.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

1. Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
2. English Language Arts Endorsement or a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with substantial English/Language Arts coursework or academic preparation sufficient to reasonably obtain an ELA endorsement within one year of hire.

1. Knowledge of current instructional practices and strategies for effectively teaching and engaging middle and high school students.
2. Ability to use a variety of instructional methods including cooperative learning, questioning strategies, and concept development.
3. Knowledge of Washington State English Language Arts Learning Standards and the ability to integrate them into classroom instruction.
4. Ability to use formative assessments and student learning data to guide instruction and support student growth. 
5. Demonstrated ability to use differentiated instructional strategies to meet diverse student learning needs.
6. Ability to integrate instructional technology and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning. 
7. Ability to participate in collaborate planning and professional learning with colleagues.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff both verbally and in writing. 

1. Prior teaching experience in English Language Arts.
2. Successful experience working with middle school and/or high school students.
