What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Operations position at Earth Right Mid-Atlantic?
Position Summary
We are seeking a strategic, results-driven Director of Operations to lead our operational, engineering, and field installation teams; solar, battery backup, service, energy efficiency, weatherization, and roofing. You will oversee the entire project lifecycle, from initial site assessment and system design to permitting, procurement, and final grid interconnection. Your primary goal will be to work with each department and scale our operational capacity, maximize project profitability, and ensure top-tier safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Partner with the executive team to develop and execute long-term operational strategies aligned with company growth targets. Develop annual and quarterly operating plans based on company sales forecasts, revenue goals, backlog, staffing levels, crew capacity, geographic coverage, equipment availability, and departmental constraints. Ensure operational capacity remains aligned with current and projected sales volume.
- Project Management: Oversee the Project Management Office and Project Admins to ensure residential and commercial solar projects, energy efficiency projects, weatherization projects, and roofing projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to customer specifications.
- Supply Chain & Procurement: Manage vendor relationships, negotiate equipment purchasing, and optimize inventory and warehousing logistics.
- Regulatory & Permitting: Ensure all installations comply with local, state, and utility regulations, accelerating the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and interconnection approval processes.
- Quality & Safety: Enforce rigorous OSHA safety standards on job sites and implement quality assurance protocols to minimize post-installation service calls.
- Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and lead a multidisciplinary team of project managers, operations staff, procurement specialists, and field installation crews.
- KPI & Metric Tracking: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (e.g., cost per watt, cycle time, truck rolls) to identify bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement.
- Departmental Leadership & Accountability: Establish clear goals, scorecards, responsibilities, and accountability standards for each department leader. Conduct regular performance reviews with department heads and ensure each business unit meets its operational, financial, quality, safety, and customer-service objectives.
- Financial Performance & P&L Accountability: Own the operational financial performance of each department, including budgeting, forecasting, gross margin, labor efficiency, material costs, overhead allocation, cash-flow timing, and variance analysis. Partner with Finance and department leaders to establish profitability targets and implement corrective action when performance falls below plan.
- Process Improvement & Standardization: Identify operational bottlenecks and develop scalable workflows, standard operating procedures, approval controls, and interdepartmental handoffs. Lead continuous-improvement initiatives designed to reduce cycle time, eliminate unnecessary costs, prevent errors, and improve consistency across departments.
- Customer Experience: Establish company-wide standards for customer communication, project updates, issue escalation, complaint resolution, and post-project support. Monitor customer satisfaction, reviews, referrals, cancellations, and recurring service issues, and ensure department leaders address the root causes of negative customer experiences.
Qualifications
- Experience: 7 years of progressive operations management experience, with at least 3-5 years specifically in the solar, renewable energy, or distributed energy resource sector.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field
- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of solar PV system design, grid-tied and battery storage technologies, energy efficiency measures, and roofing.
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to scale teams, build a safety-first culture, and manage cross-functional departments in a fast-paced environment.
- Tech Proficiency: Hands-on experience with CRM and ERP software, as well as solar-specific design and proposal tools.
