Role Description The Director of Operations is a full-time, on-site role based in Harrisonburg, VA, responsible for overseeing day-to-day operational activities across the distribution business. This position leads operational planning, sets performance goals, and ensures efficient processes in areas such as inventory management, distribution, warehousing, and door shop.
The Director of Operations Accountabilities include:
§ Leading, training, and development of all Supervisors in their job responsibilities, to include hiring the most qualified hourly personnel; daily time-management guidance to ensure all deadlines are met; managing projects; handling personnel issues.
§ Maintaining operational cost controls and truck/trailer preventive maintenance schedules.
§ Promoting and enforcing safe processes and practices with Supervisors and hourly staff daily.
§ Work with the Director of IT in establishing system and process efficiencies between Inside Sales and Operational personnel.
§ Respond quickly and effectively in urgent /emergency situations.
§ Managing the inventory cycle count process to ensure the company meets the auditor’s requirements.
§ Monitoring the RMA process; problem-solving.
§ Understand and utilize computer programs to optimize inventory management to support efficiency and continuous improvement efforts.
§ Submitting policy and program recommendations to President regarding the staff size, compensation adjustments and incentives, and operations department budgets.
§ Attendance and participation in industry seminars and conventions as needed.
Qualifications
- Strong Operations Management experience, including process optimization and oversight of distribution or logistics functions.
- Analytical Skills to interpret data, monitor KPIs, and make evidence-based decisions for performance improvement.
- Team Management capabilities, including leading, coaching, and developing diverse operational teams.
- Budgeting experience in planning, managing, and tracking operational expenses and resource allocation.
- Customer Service orientation with a focus on reliability, responsiveness, and long-term partner relationships.
- Background in building materials, wholesale distribution, or a related industry is highly beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to work on-site in a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational and communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, operations management, supply chain, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
