What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Superintendent/Project Manager position at Drill Construction Company, Inc.?
DRILLCO, INC.
80 Main Street, West Orange, NJ 07052
Construction Superintendent
Commercial General Contractor
Full-Time | $75,000 – $85,000 / year | West Orange, NJ
About DrillCo
DrillCo, Inc. is an established commercial general contractor based in West Orange, NJ, delivering quality construction across commercial, institutional, and public-sector projects throughout northern New Jersey. A significant portion of our work is publicly bid renovation work in occupied K-12 schools, where tight summer windows, night and weekend shifts during school breaks, and strict coordination with district facilities staff are the norm. We are a close-knit, hands-on firm where superintendents work directly with ownership and project managers, carry projects from mobilization through closeout, and build lasting relationships with trade partners.
We are seeking a Construction Superintendent to run our field operations on commercial renovation and public works projects.
Why This Role
This is a career step-up role for a strong working foreman, assistant superintendent, or small-GC superintendent ready to take the lead on commercial renovation projects in the $1M–$8M range. You will run the field, manage the trades, and drive the schedule. Behind you, an experienced project manager will handle change orders, pay applications, submittals, and certified payroll — so you can focus on building the work. All projects are local to northern NJ: no overnight travel, no out-of-state assignments. We will invest in your growth (Procore certification, Bluebeam, additional safety credentials) and have a clear path to increased responsibility and compensation as you grow with the company.
Responsibilities
Field Leadership:
- Run day-to-day jobsite operations on commercial renovation projects from mobilization through closeout
- Directly supervise and coordinate subcontractors and trade labor on-site; enforce schedule, quality, and workmanship standards
- Build and maintain the project schedule with 2-week and 3-week look-aheads; identify slippage early and drive recovery
- Lead daily jobsite huddles, weekly subcontractor coordination meetings, and participate in OAC meetings alongside the project manager
- Manage deliveries, staging, laydown areas, hoisting, and site logistics
- Produce complete daily reports including manpower by trade, weather, deliveries, inspections, incidents, and photo documentation in Procore
- Serve as the primary field point of contact for owners, architects, code officials, and district facilities staff
- Originate field RFIs and coordinate with the project manager on responses
- Drive quality control through pre-installation meetings, first-work inspections, mock-ups, and non-conformance tracking
- Manage punch list, final inspections, commissioning, certificate of occupancy, and turnover of O&M manuals, warranties, and as-built drawings
Renovation & Occupied-Building Work:
- Plan and execute multi-phase sequences in occupied buildings while maintaining egress, fire alarm continuity, and ADA-compliant paths of travel
- Execute summer school turnaround work with hard first-day-of-school deadlines; run night and weekend shifts during spring and winter breaks as needed
- Set up and maintain dust, noise, and odor containment — poly partitions, STARC walls, negative-air HEPA units, tacky mats, and coordinated HVAC isolation
- Document pre-existing conditions with photo surveys; field-verify concealed conditions against as-builts and communicate discrepancies promptly
- Coordinate selective demolition, shoring, abatement clearances, and C&D waste handling
Public Works & Prevailing Wage Support:
- Maintain daily manpower logs by name, trade classification, and hours that feed weekly certified payroll submissions to the NJ Wage Hub
- Verify on-site that workers are performing tasks within their paid classification; flag misclassification to the project manager immediately
- Post and maintain required site documentation including NJDOL prevailing wage determinations, PWCRA certificates, EEO, OSHA, and workplace posters
- Coordinate daily with school district facilities directors, Business Administrators, and CMs (on NJSDA projects); interface with NJ UCC sub-code officials on inspections
- Track subcontractor DBE/MBE/WBE/SBE/DVOB participation and apprenticeship ratios; provide source data to the office for monthly compliance reporting
- Maintain NJ DOE Office of Student Protection (OSP) clearance; coordinate clearance status for subcontractor workforce prior to school mobilization
Safety:
- Enforce OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards and DrillCo safety policies on all assigned projects
- Conduct weekly toolbox talks, pre-task plans, and documented jobsite safety inspections; identify and correct hazards promptly
- Verify subcontractor safety documentation — insurance certificates, site-specific safety plans, SDS, and competent-person designations — before work begins
- Investigate and document any incidents or near-misses; report immediately to ownership and the project manager
- Promote a culture of safety across all trades; lead by example on every shift
