Will be responsible for proficiency in operating procedures and maintaining surgical field and equipment before, during and after the operative experience. Consists of activities performed in the operating room where the scrub anticipates and meets patient safety and quality of care needs by assisting the surgeon. Also consists of activities to maintain equipment and instrumentation.
Duties:
This position operates in a professional office environment. Duties:
- Opens/closes work area per protocol on a daily basis.
- Assures safety and quality of care by adhering to professional standards; follows facility policies and procedures and uses proper techniques as set by the association of surgical technologists, and other governing agency regulations.
- Prepares and maintains the sterile field for the surgical procedure per AORN/AST standards.
- Stays focused on the case, patient, and anticipates the surgeon’s needs.
- Initiates and/or participates in the “Time Out” process at the beginning of every case.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Maintains nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
- Sterilizes instruments in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and standards of care.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
- Builds working relationships with all staff and is a “team player”.
- Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain a steady level of productivity.
- Interacts professionally with physicians, patients, families, and others.
- Introduces self to patients while using appropriate volume and tone of voice.
- Knowledgeable in the use of and maintains autoclave and equipment.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from health care support personnel.
- Uses telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to appropriate personnel.
- Changes out medical gas tanks as needed.
- Complies with OSHA, HIPAA and CLIA regulations.
- Complies with facility policies and the employee handbook.
- Follows and promotes the facility mission, vision and values and Dr. Black’s guiding principles.
- Performs other duties as needed.
- Reports to the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, and OR Manager.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Completes mandatory annual education as scheduled and in a timely fashion.
- Attends 80% of staff meetings annually, reads and signs staff meetings if absent.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Completes work within designated times. Monitors timecard for any irregularities and obtains approval for any overtime from DON prior to working it.
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized clock system correctly.
- Maintains neat and clean work area.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist school or equivalent experience
- Certified surgical technologist certificate preferred, and certificate maintained
- CEUs maintained
- Ophthalmic surgery experience desirable
- Certified in CPR
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to interact professionally with physicians and co-workers.
- Ability to operate autoclave equipment and run tests.
- Ability to operate Steris equipment.
- Ability to operate microscope, phaco, laser, ORA and other OR equipment.
