Background & Qualifications
- High school diploma, or equivalent, required; college coursework is advantageous.
- Ideally 2–5 years of experience working in a clinical setting
- Current experience as an ophthalmic assistant is preferred.
- Clear, effective communication and strong interpersonal interaction.

Patient Interaction & Clinical Support

- Explains the purpose and patient experience of each test performed.
- Collects comprehensive patient histories, including chief complaint, current illness, ocular and general medical history, family history, allergies, and medications.
- Performs consistent and accurate documentation and testing
- Provides support to the ophthalmic photographer for fundus, external, and anterior segment imaging.
- Determines the appropriate order in which patients should be brought back for testing.
- Escorts patients from the waiting area and initiates data collection.
- Informs patients about who will see them next and ensures comfort during transitions.
- Adjusts testing order as needed to maintain efficient flow to the physician.
- Handles phone inquiries related to ocular emergencies, medication refills, and general care questions.
- Coordinates with reception staff to maintain smooth scheduling and movement.
- Troubleshoots equipment issues.
- Replaces bulbs and checks instrument connections.
- Conducts autoclaving and ensures instrument sterility.
- Reports ongoing equipment problems to the Lead Ophthalmic Technician.
- Seeks guidance from senior staff when needed and avoids working beyond skill level.
- Calls patients to confirm appointments two business days before their visit.
- Keeps exam and procedure rooms clean and orderly.
- Maintains adequate stock levels in clinical rooms.
- Completes additional tasks as assigned.
