Position Overview

We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery used in underground and overhead electrical construction projects. This position supports crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical infrastructure by performing excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling activities in compliance with company standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and trenchers to support electrical construction projects.
  • Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure accurate excavation and grading.
  • Perform pre-operation and post-operation inspections to maintain equipment safety and functionality.
  • Monitor equipment performance and promptly report mechanical issues to the maintenance team.
  • Collaborate with site supervisors, electricians, and crew members to coordinate efficient workflows.
  • Ensure all equipment operations comply with OSHA standards and company safety protocols.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and hazard assessments to promote a safe work environment.
  • Assist with manual labor or general construction tasks when equipment is not in use.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervision or project management.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment (excavators, dozers, trenchers, etc.).

Preferred

  • OSHA 10 (or higher) certification.

OR an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience that results in the successful performance of the job. Additional education may substitute for required experience on one-for-one year basis or vice versa.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and grade stakes.
  • Ability to read and follow site plans, utility markings, and verbal/written instructions.
  • Solid understanding of safety procedures and best practices in construction.
  • Proficiency in operating multiple types of heavy equipment.

Work Environment

Heavy work environment. Continuous indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, and/or emotional hazardous environment. Work requires lifting 50 pounds or more and wearing protective equipment; exposure to extreme weather, noise, hazard; requiring climbing, crawling, lying, and working under pressure.
