Direct Counsel represents a leading national law firm seeking an experienced Tax Controversy Associate to join its Taxation & Wealth Planning practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for a tax attorney with strong controversy and litigation experience to work on sophisticated matters involving audits, appeals, tax litigation, and disputes with federal and state taxing authorities.

The Role

• Represent clients in tax controversy matters, audits, and administrative appeals.
• Handle tax litigation and related court proceedings.
• Conduct sophisticated legal research and draft briefs, pleadings, memoranda, and other tax controversy documents.
• Work on matters involving the U.S. Tax Court, IRS, and other tax authorities.
• Manage multiple matters simultaneously while meeting critical deadlines.
• Communicate directly with clients and attorneys regarding strategy and case developments.
• Develop practical strategies for resolving complex tax disputes.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of relevant tax controversy experience.
• J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation required.
• Experience with tax audits, appeals, and litigation required.
• Tax Court clerkship, IRS Counsel, or DOJ Tax Division/Tax Branch experience required.
• Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
• Strong academic credentials.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
• Strong client-service skills and attention to detail.
• Active Bar admission in the state where the attorney will practice required.

Compensation & Benefits

• $230,000–$250,000 annual salary in New York and Washington, DC, depending on experience and qualifications.
