Job Description:

Franklin & Marshall College is recruiting for a full-time Studio Manager/Instructional Sculpture Lab Technician.

  • Location: F&M Campus - Lancaster, PA

  • Schedule: 40 hours, Monday - Friday. May require evenings and weekends.

  • Approved Annual Salary: $54,000.00 - $58,000.00

Job Description:

The Studio Manager and Instructional Sculpture Lab Technician supports the Visual Art Department in the Winter Visual Arts Center. As a sculpture tech, this position primarily supports the sculpture program and entails partnering with faculty to deliver the department's pedagogical mission. As a studio manager, this position organizes, operates, and maintains the teaching studios and their support spaces, assists faculty and other techs in the department, and, by working closely with Facilities & Operations and other entities, generally manages building operations. This position is also responsible for supporting the department's curatorial mission by installing 4-5 planned exhibitions in the Russo Gallery.

Essential Functions:

Instructional Sculpture Lab Technician:

  • Maintain, design and fabricate equipment for various sculpture studios.
  • Work with sculpture faculty to order supplies.
  • Provide instruction and supervision to faculty and students using studio equipment.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers.
  • Guide and consult with students working on independent projects and preparing for student exhibitions in the Phillips Museum or Russo galleries within the WVAC.
  • Maintain large equipment, hand and power tools, studio furniture and fixtures, tech (i.e., laser cutter, CNC cutter, studio CPUs, etc.).
  • Complete routine maintenance, storage, and disposal of Hazmat materials.
  • Procure and utilize purchasing platform (Diplomart) for class materials, i.e., Plywood, Steel, plaster, campus savage/recycling, etc. Ensure proper recycling and disposal of waste materials in the studios.
  • Manage and implement all relevant safety and health procedures. Safely perform any art-making process needed at the moment by students or faculty on a case-by-case basis.
  • Presence/Instructional support in all 5 sculpture classes hosted in the WVAC during the academic year. Instructional support for the course every year. Scheduled studio hours (10-15 hrs per week) of in-studio student assistance. Studio and instructional support of CI & FOW courses when needed.

Studio/facilities Management:

  • Oversee the organization, operation, and maintenance of all the teaching studios and their support spaces in the WVAC.
  • Provide general assistance to faculty and other technicians in the department, and oversee the safety, security, and proper disposal of waste within the building.
  • Coordinate with Facilities & Operations on building use and repair, maintenance, cleaning, keys, and fobs and their appropriate configurations, etc.
  • Partner with Public Safety as needed for security purposes if/when necessary.
  • Facilitate building tours with alumni, Advancement, and Admission, coordinate with facilities on maintenance and building improvements.
  • Coordinate with general services and event services during use of building common spaces, studios, and outdoor areas.
  • Provide support for:
  • club activities hosted within the building.
  • annual visiting faculty resident.
  • Coordinate with the North Museum and other outside organizations as they host events that impact the WVAC.
  • Assist with aspects of general building upkeep and improvements not performed by facilities. Facilitate the adaptation of studios to meet the needs of ever-changing classes hosted within the WVAC. Build furniture and fixtures for studios and galleries.

WVAC Gallery Preparator:

  • Support the department's curatorial mission by installing 4-5 planned exhibitions in the Russo Gallery. Work with the Phillips Museum to host in the Russo galleries and Gipson Grand Forum.
  • Coordinate with the Phillips Museum to borrow/lend resources and equipment, and preparation for the occasion show that the Museum may host in the Russo galleries and Gipson Grand Forum.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or MFA.
  • At least 3 years of experience as an Instructional Lab Technician or similar experience (teaching/mentoring, creative studio/facilities management)
  • Knowledge of a wide range of sculpture materials, tools, and processes.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite Products (Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver's license (Job dependent)
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with budget management and running a clean and highly organized working/learning environment.
  • Prior professional work experience in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
  • Experience and comfort driving vans for field trips.
  • Prior experience using specific systems (Photoshop, InDesign).
  • MFA in Sculpture, Design, or other relevant field.

Additional Information:
