Position Overview
The Traveling Superintendent will oversee and coordinate construction activities across multiple project sites, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and to quality standards. This role requires frequent travel to job sites to manage on-site crews, subcontractors, and resources, implement and maintain project schedules, and communicate progress and issues to project management. The Traveling Superintendent acts as the on-site leader to drive productivity, enforce safety and quality standards, and resolve field issues promptly to meet project milestones.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate day-to-day construction activities across multiple job sites, ensuring work is performed safely and per contract requirements.
- Develop, implement, and maintain detailed project schedules and daily work plans; monitor progress against Project Schedules and update stakeholders.
- Coordinate and manage subcontractors, suppliers, and on-site crews to optimize productivity and sequencing of work.
- Enforce safety programs and OSHA requirements, conduct jobsite safety meetings, and address hazards immediately.
- Perform quality control inspections, ensure work meets drawings, specifications, and applicable codes, and document non-conforming work.
- Communicate regularly with Project Managers, engineers, owners, and field personnel to report progress, risks, and schedule impacts.
- Identify, document, and help manage change orders, delays, and claims; recommend corrective actions to mitigate schedule or cost impacts.
- Maintain accurate field records, daily logs, RFIs, submittals, and progress reports.
- Coordinate materials and equipment deliveries and manage on-site logistics to support continuous work flow.
- Mentor, train, and lead on-site personnel to improve performance and adherence to site procedures.
- Travel frequently between project sites and be available for extended site stays as project needs dictate.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Superintendent or similar field leadership role on commercial or industrial construction projects.
- Proven experience with construction Scheduling and managing Project Schedules; proficiency with scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) preferred.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, means and methods, building codes, and quality control practices.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts.
- Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Committed to safety with OSHA 30-hour certification preferred and a track record of enforcing site safety standards.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently and work extended hours on-site as required; valid drivers license and clean driving record.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, detail orientation, and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities under schedule pressure.
- Certifications such as Certified Construction Manager (CCM), PMP, or trade-specific credentials are a plus.
