Protection and Control Engineer- Substations
Location: Hybrid in Fort Worth, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in office, Thursday and Friday remote
Salary: $100-150k DOE
Position Overview
The Protection and Control Engineer will design, develop, and commission protection and control systems for substations and high-voltage power equipment. This role focuses on creating protection schemes, relay settings, drawings and documentation, and ensuring reliable integration with SCADA and control systems. The engineer will work with project teams, vendors, and field technicians to deliver safe, code-compliant solutions for utility, industrial and data center projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and specify protection and control schemes for high-voltage substations, transformers, feeders and associated equipment.
- Develop relay settings, coordination studies and protection philosophies in accordance with applicable standards and client requirements.
- Create and maintain CAD drawings, single-line diagrams, wiring and AC/DC schematics using AutoCAD, MicroStation or similar tools.
- Prepare detailed protection and control design deliverables, relay panel layouts, wiring diagrams and bill of materials.
- Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site commissioning, relay testing and troubleshooting of protection systems and control panels.
- Integrate protection devices with SCADA/DCS systems and configure communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, etc.).
- Review vendor submittals, evaluate equipment specifications and conduct design reviews to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Implement and follow quality assurance and quality control procedures; review drawings and test reports and manage document control.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, field crews and third-party contractors to support construction, installation and energization activities.
- Provide technical support for operational troubleshooting, root cause analysis and system performance optimization, including for data center power systems where applicable.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; Masters degree preferred.
- 5 years of experience in protection and control engineering with hands-on exposure to high-voltage substation projects.
- Demonstrated electrical aptitude and practical experience with high-voltage equipment, relay panels and substation systems.
- Proficiency in CAD tools (required): AutoCAD and/or MicroStation; experience with SolidWorks is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of protection relays and vendors (e.g., SEL, GE, Siemens) and experience developing relay settings and performing relay testing/commissioning.
- Familiarity with SCADA integration, communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus) and data acquisition.
- Experience preparing AC/DC schematics, single-line diagrams and detailed wiring diagrams.
- Experience with QA/QC processes and tools (Bluebeam, document control) is desirable.
- Nice-to-have: experience with SolidWorks, MicroStation, Quality Assurance, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, AC/DC Schematics, Quality Control, SCADA and Data Center power systems.
- Professional engineer (PE) or EIT license or ability to obtain licensure preferred.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills; ability to work on site, travel to project locations and lift/handle equipment as required.
- Valid drivers license and commitment to safety-compliant work practices.
